I have an R reg W210 E300TD (great car but...)
As the engine starts to warm up in the morning, a strange whining noise kicks in quite suddenly, as the temperature reaches about 40C. The noise sounds rather like a hydraulic pump; the pitch is pretty constant, but it gets somewhat "throatier" as you increase revs and power demand. The noise level is quite intense - unmistakable and certainly similar to the general engine noise. The pitch is not related to engine or road speed and it does it in gear on the move or stationary in neutral. Once the temperature reaches normal - about 80C - the noise disappears and doesn't come back. The engine has to get quite cool again before the problem will re-occur.
My first thought was a slipping belt, but it isn't the sort of alternator belt slipping "squeal", more of a deep hum. Next thought was water pump - because of the temperature - relationship, but then I had an oil change - and the noise went away completely. 1000 miles later and it's starting up again and now I'm really worried, because if oil fixed it then it's inside the engine and if it's inside the engine I'm going to need a Securicor delivery to pay for repairs.......
I have searched the forum to see if anyone has had a similar problem but can't see anything, so if anyone has any suggestions at all, I would be very grateful. All my local MB outfit could suggest was a "hole in the exhaust, Sir", which despite my scepticism I had welded up, to absolutely no effect of course.
Thanks, in paranoia!
