Hi, I´m hoping someone may be able to help with the following problem. I´m ironing out the faults one by one but this one has me!
The rear wiper motor and washer haven´t worked on my 99 car since I´ve owned it.
If I supply power to the motor directly it works. I have changed the switch on the dash, and the 5 pin relay on the motor. I´ve also checked the fuses (in both boxes under the bonnet, and the one under the osr seat)
Is there another relay hidden somewhere? or maybe another fuse?

Any help would be appreciated, I´m not trying to avoid a dealer but from the experiences I have had here, they aren´t too hot on this type of thing (they diagnosed the switch!)

Pete.

it sounds like the only thing you haven't checked

is the soundness of the wiring through the hinge and tailgate to the motor. These are known to break on 124s, and I can't see that 210 is going to be that different. Are you getting a 12 v feed to the motor from its own wiring when you switch the circuit on?

Hi Myros

Thanks for the reply

It´s been a while since I last stripped the tailgate and checked it, but I did check the wiring through the hinge for continuity and all were ok, and that was my last hope!
There´s no 12v feed at the relay, pin 30. I checked the switch is giving a feed at the relay. So, am now stuck at where the main 12v feed goes between the fuse and the 5 pin relay.
I remember on the 124´s that there was quite a big wash/wipe relay in the tailgate, and wonder if it´s mounted somewhere else on the 210?

Thanks again, and hope you may be able to help further.

Pete.

Yes just confirming that there have been a few 210 cars with the broken wire at the roof level on the LH hinge,, this is also affecting rear lamps and reverse lamps now

Before spending more time and money on the problem it's worth disconnecting the battery for half an hour. This will reset the ECU and SAM units.

Hope tis helps!

Thanks malcolm210, does this have any adverse affects? Is it likely that anything will need reprogramming or setting at the dealer afterwards? Apart from the obvious radio code, which I´ve just done after fitting a new cd unit.

I left Mercedes in 1999, which was a shame, cos I now regret missing out on the knowledge I could have had! And didn´t know at the time I would own a ´99 Merc!

The only things that need resetting are electric windows by holding down each switch for a couple of seconds and the Anti-Skid Control by turning the steering fully lock to lock. If you have a sunroof fitted this will also need a reset, again by holding the switch down for a few seconds.

Disconnected the battery, unfortunately no change. Regarding the skid control, does this need to be done with the front wheels raised? or can it be done with the engine running? (using the pas)
Any other help would be gratefully received. Where does the red/green wire go between fuse 19 under the rear seat and the tailgate hinge?

Pete.

p.s. just been reading about the SAM unit on the 203, you´re a knowledgable bunch! Is there a chance this is the problem on mine? It may have been jump started before I bought it, as it was from an independant sales place. This is the only fault though. Is there a SAM unit on the 210 and whereabouts is it?

Hi Malcolm

Just been browsing through old threads, and came across another posting about these rear wipers from 11/06, I see you had the same problem!!

Did you resolve yours? Did the resetting ecu´s work on yours?
Also, did you get to the bottom of the relays? I have changed the 5 pin relay on the motor, but am confused as to where to look for another. Where is the rear SAM unit?

I will end up booking it into the new local dealer I think, but they don´t see many estates here, so I don´t want to waste days of headscratching and really can´t do without the car.

Many thanks

Pete.

Hi Pete,

I havn't resolved the problem yet, my rear wiper didn't work immediately after the electronic ignition switch assembly was replaced so assumed that caused the problem. I have been down the road of changing the relay on the wiper assembly to no avail but have not disconnected the battery to do a full reset yet. I was hoping someone would post the answer in time.

I've learnt to live without the wiper, it is an annoyance but not worth opening my wallet to the local dealer.

Sorry can't be of more help

Malcolm

Thanks Malcolm, I´ve lived without it for nearly 2 years, but hate having things that don´t work!

Hopefully we´ll both get sorted soon, I´ll probably strip the tailgate again sometime soon, and spend some more time getting my head around the wiring. I´m still convinced there must be another relay that controls the intermittent etc.

Pete.
