Firstly thanks to everyone who gave me advice on buying my W210 a couple of months ago - its my first merc and i am over the moon with it! The car is superb i cannot see myself buying any other make from now on! The only problem being my mates calling it a Taxi! LOL.

I now want to upgrade the speakers does anyone know the sizes of the factory ones (front door, rear door and parcel shelf)?

Has anyone else done an upgrade? what did you use?

Thanks a lot and look forward to hearing from you.

Luke

Dont forget the the speaker are very low impedance on a MB down to 1Ω

Malcolm,
Are all Mercedes speakers 1 ohm impedance?
Is there any way of using 4 ohm impedance speakers or would the easiest way be to wire in a Amp?

I do know that the Audio 20 and 30 were as on the 129, as the same head unit was in all of the cars,so that must be the case, an amp is the easiest I think.

If you have an ohm meter, they are easy to measure

If the audio 20 and 30 are, Audio 10 is bound to be :( i was,nt gonna change the stereo and CD changer, just upgrade the speakers looks like i,ll have to look at doing something else.
But i,ll get me multi meter out and check like you suggest.

i have already upgraded the head unit so the impedance is not an issue - sorry should have stated this.

nice 201 2.5D 1993 & very nice 129 SL500 1994
The speaker impedance is still an issue.
Do not fit speakers with an impedance lower than your amp can drive, doing so may kill the amp or cause gross distortion at what should be reasonable listening levels making any mods you do a waste of time and money. Using speakers with to high an impedance will result in lower listening levels and and inability to go realy loud.
Most of the common car amplifiers will cope best with 4ohm loads, some of the high power stuff requires 2ohm load (2x4ohm across each output).
Some of the daft compact silly power amps can handle 1ohm loads, but there are sound technical reasons to avoid them, go for one of the larger amplifiers (more expensive) with an internal higher voltage power supply if you are looking for 50w+ per channel.

Some mercs have awkward sized speaker baskets which limit your choice of aftermarket "upgrades", The 124 front has 4.5 inch units and there are no alternatives readily available you need to make adaptors to fit smaller 4 inch units which will almost certainly cut the LF response.

Beware of peak and music power they are little more than con artists terms, what you want is sine wave RMS watts, just like the ones that light bulbs use and engine power is specified in. Peak power (sine) is twice RMS (sine) music power is anybody's guess and totaly meaning less. Loud speakers handle power in accordance with the music level and since music consists of varying levels the average RMS power applied to the speakers will be about one tenth and no more of the maximum power that your amp can deliver without distortion, this means that speakers can handle connection tio a higher power amp than you would think. connecting high power speakers to a low power amp can in some circumstances destroy your nice new spekers.
