W210 - Steering with metallic rubbing/grinding

When I turn on full lock either direction I often hear a metallic rubbing/grinding noise (as if two metal parts are rubbing against each other under pressure). This does not happen all the time but more often when the car has been driven for some time and only at the extremities of the lock. MY indie has checked and can see no fault. Has anyone experienced this?

Does the noise only appear when the steering is being turned, and once turned onto full lock it is all quiet

Yes the noise is only heard at the last points of the lock when turning and no noise once turned, doesn't sound like the pump to me but more like two unlubricated parts rubbing.

Then this must be the ball joints, and not power steering components
