All, Im thinking of changing the thermostat on my car this weekend, she is a W210 220cdi 2001 - I have reported on here that the car will not go over 60deg on the temp gauge when cruising on the motorway, even when pulling 90 - 100 mph fora few miles it struggles to hit 80 deg the only time the car gets anywhere near or over 80 if im stuck in traffic - and on these cold mornings thats what I wish for as the cabin never heats up to a hot and cosy level.

I will order the part today / tomorrow but is it and easy job to do? is there anything I should watch out for?

Would be gratefull for some advice, even better a step by step guide!!

Thanks

it's a bit fiddly

but no worse than many other jobs on the 210. The main thing to be careful of is that you don't wallop any of the fuel lines that run nearby, if it's anything like a 320. You'll also have to syphon out some coolant if you don't want it going all over the shop. If you plan it all out in advance and visualise what you are going to do, the actual swap takes about 5 mins. The rest is all preparation and tidying up afterwards.
44 is the stat in this diagram

hi,
I also have a 51 plate E220 210 chassis. I'm getting very good MPG but was stuck on M6 last night with very little discernible heat coming out of the vents. SWMBO not happy nor was i come to that! My first thought is a problematic thermostat.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good how to please?

Also thanks to Gary Warburton (indie in Fleetwood), for giving me a bit of his time
Thanks
Rob

Hi there, would it be possible to have a copy of those instructions on how to replace the thermostat?! I am having the same problem of low temp on the dash needle and very low heat through heater. Coolant levels are fine. Thank you!

I changed my thermostat on 220cdi recently. Heating efficiency and fuel consumption improved dramatically. Took about an hour to do. You'll need Torx sockets and a 'wobble drive' for your socket set. It's a bit fiddly to get thermostat housing off (and back on) but possible without removing oil filter housing. Be careful not to drop and bolts and make sure you re-connect any sensors/hoses before you start engine or you'll bring up the EMU warning light like I did. (It resets after a while)
