Hello, had my w210 320 cdi for a few weeks now and occasionally noticed a whirring noise from the front end

being a bit of a part time mechanic on fords (which need acres of attention) i jacked the car up to check for a faulty wheel bearing.

All i could find was a busted near side track rod end that was giving a slight bit of play.

could this be throwing my tracking out and causing excess tyre noise or should i be looking elsewhere?

my car is going into mainly mercs in glasgow to get the track rod end sorted but im worried about this other noise as i think its coming from the drivers side.

it becomes noticeable at around 30mph, increases in pitch with acceleration but its not transmission related as i can put the car into neutral and it stays there.

it also doesnt follow the wheel bearing symptoms as going round a corner does not make it any noisier or quieter

has anybody experienced this before, is it just a gaurd catching the tyre?

When a wheel bearing goes it sets up a humming sound at and from around 39 mph,, cornering does not change things.

If the front end is jacked and the wheel turned by hand the roughness can be felt (you can feel the rollers), compare this with the other side and you will feel the difference

Its more when rotating slowly you can feel the rollers, it is slight but I cant think of anything else

think your spot on,

my mate told me that they are not tapered bearings so the usual tell tale signs dont work

going into Mainly Mercs tomoro to get sorted

will let you know the outcome

they are taperred rollers.
you will need to remove the seal to do a visual check on the inner bearing so have a new one ready.

gsf do a kit including a new seal....they are ok but the cheap bearing don't last as long as genuine....the new dust cap is often incorrect so don't wreck the original.
