something i was going to get round to last year

On selection manual mode on the temperaure controls and turning both temp wheels down to minimum, cold air comes out of the vents , does anyone know what temp it should be or the differential between ambient and what comes out of the vent.
Seems to work OK but not as cold as i would expect
would be nice to have some idea before a re-gas

I think that it has to be in the auto mode to have the air con working, if its not that cold then a re charge should fix it

Not sure what you mean by manual mode. Auto really controls the fan and vent selection. The temp is always thermostatic, unless you wind the controls past the click in which case it will give you as much hot or cold air as it can. With the engine running and the temp selectors on full cold, it should get pretty chilly. If not, a regass is probably needed.

manual is , as you say the temp wheels wound right down and un-press the auto button in the middle of the temp wheel. It looks as if a re-gas is on the cards

you could try the Kwik-Fit service - about £45 for a re-gas but no charge is made if the system was already at the rated capacity or if they find a leak during the process.
