Ive just finished replacing the audio 20 CD with a JVC double DIN head unit with DVD and freeview tv, very happy apart from one small problem, after unplugging the old radio the electric lid below has stopped working, it is obviously linked to the stock radio because it is where the CD changer goes if you have one, anybody have any idea how I can get it working?

SL R129 Speaker Upgrade - Advice Please

Hi Malcolm, before we get into the audio bit I thought I'd tell you that we got the air-con sorted. My Merc Specialist Tony (owner) of TM Motors of Molesey Surrey and his trusty band of specialists sorted it. Interestingly, they plugged in the diagnostics, cleared all the fault codes but it still didn't operate as it should, (the centre dash HAV's were still not operating correctly) then, albeit the new controller was purchased for the SL they established it had to be aligned (coded) to the SL - it was supplied coded suitable for an E Class - weird eh. Then it was also discovered that one of the plastic hoses going into the vacuum manifold under the bonnet had been removed by someone but then put back in the wrong hole - scmucks. That was corrected and bingo all was fine.

==========================================================

With regard to Audio, I have just removed an after market Pioneer head unit and installed an Audio 10 and CD Changer. Although I'm not one to have the volume up high as often as poss I do like crisp reproduction when it is cranked up a bit (not full). I find that the woofers in the doors don't handle the bass frequencies to good (even when the bass is only up around the midway point). When it's wound up a bit it the bass reproduction just gets somewhat wooly and distorted. I don't know if you have any real experience in this field or not, but can you, or anyone else reading this post advise on what would be a good pair of aftermarket speakers to buy to give me better reproduction and handle higher volumes better than the standard units I have now.
Thanks
Dale.

------------- what is std speaker diam in the SL129, ohms and power output (watts), I do not want to be 'adapting' new speakers to fit into the doors, I want a simple no aggro replacement, ta ;)

In addition to my first post, would taking out the Audio 20 also effect the aerial amp as the signal now seems weak, is the amp powered up from the old radio?

Thats a hard question, but if it was fine before, maybe. Its a known fact the the thin wire on the center pin of the aerial plug breaks just at the back end of the plug. Many post on that fault

Yes Malcolm, I found the amp above the n/s back side glass it has 3 wires to it, fed the middle wire/ pink with blue trace with 12v and it works, I traced the wire down to the rear fuses and fed it there, easy to get to, to reverse it.

Alan, put the gear lever back out of the way, lift up the gear lever surround at the front, unclip the ashtray and remove, under the storage box remove two torx screws and remove the box, under the radio going straight up there are two more torx screws at the front corners slacken them right off they dont come out, remove the radio, if you need any more help I have just done 2 of our cars, fitted JVC double DIN units, could not get the factory aerials to work so have fitted roof aerials, the electric door on the bin wont work after you unplug the audio 20, Steve.

Not managed to get the trap door to open yet, there are only 4 wires to the unit for all the switches, eg rear wiper/headrests/hazard lights etc inc the door motor so it is probably the magic of can bus trickery which I dont claim to understand.

Evening Steve, now having had the head unit in for a while i think that the aerial is not working 100% as rds will not lock. In 1 post you said you got it working by back feeding the amp on the rear quater then in another said you fitted a roof unit, which is best?
