hi
im considering swapping my company car (a**i)for one of either of these 2.
can anyone tell me if the e500 is significantly cheaper to run than the e55?
i do around 25k miles a year and get 40p a mile from my company.will that cover the fuel?
are the characteristics very different for these ie refinement handling etc
i must admit i prefer the more understated looks of the e500 and like the estate versions of both.
looking at 04 05 models seem ****** good value.
any help much appreciated.

I would stick to the E500 the running cost are much lower on many aspects, the E500 will give you points on your license with ease

If I was doing 25K miles a year in my Merc, I would serisouly consider getting a 320CDI and getting it chipped - probably end up with more torque than the E500...

but once the cost is taken into consideration is there a massive difference in fuel costs?

Why don't you drive them both to compare them. I know which way you'll want to go then.

I agree with you on the point about value - recently saw a 2005 E500 estate, fully loaded, with 7 seats and just 52k miles sell on ebay for £9200. I drive an E320 CDI, which is fine, however, I would love one of those V8s

Motorway miles at any speed including up to 150 mph my V8 returned 28.9 on B roads 23-26mph can be had.

Yes its only the difference in MPG the in my case cost me £175 per year over the previous 320 engine.

With the 55 and a large mileage things like brakes can cost double on a service and would need changing every 30k on average at around £1k

I'd go for the 500. The newer one has 388bhp so isn't exactly lacking. it will be less sore on fuel (by quite a bit), less sore or tyres, cheaper to insure and service but still go fast :D

I appreciate the sentiment and can understand the comments of others.

However, the E55 will cost more, depreciate more and have higher maintenance costs (insurance, fuel, tyres, brakes). It is undoubtedly a much quicker car with reserves of power and exceptional handling and braking performance.

On the Queen's Highway, I don't know that you will necessarly see that much difference in journey times. I have had a succession of diesel cars and they perform every bit as well as petrol cars, especially in the mid speed range for cruising and overtaking. I would not even bother getting an E 320 CDI chipped. Fuel economy on the other hand is excellent - I can go from Warwickshire to Glasgow or Edinburgh and back without refuelling, at an everage speed of around 70 mph. If you drive 25,000 miles a year, that is a consideration - along with low maintenance costs and higher residuals.

In the final analysis is it down to personal choice, but having the fastest car on the road does not necessarily get you there any faster.

How many sets of tyres go in the process too? I assume your now in the single digits?

Would you believe I'm being really, really good and my rear tyres are going to last 20K plus.
