Car is a 2003 E320CDi. Is there a cure for the wipers juddering across the screen in anything other than heavy rain/snow? They dont seem to flip/flop as they should. They are newish blades. Also, can the auto feature be disabled? I dont like it and it wont switch the wipers off promptly when the screen is dry.
Next prob. Is there a way to disable the interlock between the ign key and the gearlever? I want to get it out of PARK without having to get the key into the ign every time. This is a real P.I.T.A.

Thanks.

The flat of the wiper arm must be parallel with the windscreen and checked with a straight edge over the face of the arm. any straightening is done with two pairs of padded pliers.

The screen must be free of any contamination that includes the blades, the new blades will also need cleaning once used on a contaminated screen.

If the juddering is sorted out the parking in the intermitant mode would be correct.

No,it is not possible to disable the gear shift from the Key. this is a saftey issue on automatic cars.

If the auto function is not working very well then that indicates to me that the screen is not clean. I would recommend using a decent glass cleaner then a glass polish and see if that improves the situation. I use Autoglym glass cleaner and glass polish.

As above - when they start to squeak I get out the galss cleaner and all is well. The auto mechanism is a real boon _ I wouldn't want to be without it. It's vastly better than a normal intermittent.

Thanks for the thoughts. The glass looks clean enough to me: the wipers pass over the sensors and if it needs to be any cleaner then it's going to be a pain but I'll give it a try.
Regarding the Park/ign lock thing. I understand the 'safety' issues but I'm a big boy and really need for the thing to come out of gear in the garage. There is a hole in the rear of the cubby into which you poke a rod and that releases the lever. does anybody know what that works and if it could be made to be (semi-)permanent?

Rain sensors can give problems - worse so on aftermarket windscreens. Has it been replaced? The hole to release the lever is for emergency purposes (lost keys, electrical problems etc). You may be a big boy but if a child pulled it out of park on a steep hill...................

So no, it can't be disabled.

Thanks for that although the last (and only) time a child was in my car the bastard had broken in. There must be some kind of electrical connection between the key and the lever which could be over-ridden with a button, hidden or otherwise. I need to be able to push the car in the garage. No ifs, buts or maybes.

I need to be able to push the car in the garage.

Got an elderly gentleman (nearer to 80 than 70) lives over the road and he always pushes car in & pulls it out of his garage. Only a Fiesta, but I still admire him for doing it. His reason? Very simple. Can't get in or out once the car's in the garage as there isn't the space to open the door. :)

Can't remember, but won't the key come out when it's in neutral?

I'm much like your 'elderly gent' Got the width but not the length;) and need to push it back and forwards to get at different things.

As malcolm said, it is quite important to have the blades as close to right angles to the glass as possible, I had this problem on my van and adjusted them by twisting the arms as described using 2 small adjustable wrenches and a set square to check if I was getting close. This sorted things a treat. I suspected the alignment was out as they juddered in one direction and not the other.

Regarding the auto wipers, I am sure someone has mentioned elsewhere on the forum about getting the sensors recalibrated after a screen replacement, Probably a job for a stealership though?
