Hi everyone

Unless I use the trickle charge my w211 (E240 Avantguard) battery goes flat in a week. My car is on a drive so I am able to get the charger close by using the extension lead. At the moment the charger is on the floor, under the car, and I place it in a plastic bag so it remains dry . I then connect it to the battery

The problem is that the charger gets very hot and that worries me. Ideally the charger should be in the boot next to the battery, however the boot can’t close as the extension lead is too thick. Is there a way I can resolve this?
Thanks

If the charger is getting hot that indicates a high charge rate, as the battery is going flat in a week I suspect you need a new battery. The only other option is power is being drawn when switched off.
You should get at least 3 weeks before you need to charge.

Does your E240 (like mine) have another accessory battery in the front? If so it maybe that one that is having the drain problem. It's worth checking.

Depending on what charger you have, I would not put it in a bag, they need air! Decent ones would be water resistant.

I agree with the above, if your battery is going that flat you need it checked out! I can leave my w221 for 3-4 weeks and it start without a glitch, even show long it’s stupid eco mode lit green within a mile and half.

The only other option is to buy a decent charger, buy the charging attachment cable that you permanently attach to the battery and then route it out somewhere for easy connection to the charger. This said I keep all mine internal to help avoid any moisture etc build up on the plug ends despite them having a cap.

Assuming your Alternator is ok i would suggest your battery has had it sounds like it is not only charging incorrectly but discharging as well both classic Battery faults.
