W211 estate 2.2CDI 2003. W140/S320/1998
I posted at the beginning of the week about the fact that following a conductor plate change in my 2004 2.2 estate it doesn't often change up to 5th and the speedo has now stopped working. I know the speed sensors need changing and figured that's probably why the speedo has stopped.
Could they also affect the willingness of the gearbox to do better than 3000rpm at 60mph? Otherwise the changes are smooth - sometimes when cold it even works 'all the way' (as I used to).

The box worked and changed perfectly when it did.
But on several occasions, it would either go into security mode and stay in second or give what the driver of a manual car would call clutch slip on a hill. Having read that the five speed box was virtually indestructible I was recommended to do the oil and plate change. It was then clear that the gear lever was defective (a common fault as I understand it). Since changing that the box behaves correctly, except that the manual up and down shift doesn't work and sometimes nor does the C/S button.
The speed sensors definetely need changing - so I have a speedo that sometimes works. Yesterday the box worked perfectly in all gears. Then, after shopping for 30 mîns, it again wouldn't change up into 5th.
The car is high mileage (260K) but has been well maintained.
Having migrated from a W140 that was destroyed last year by a kid on his telephone, 9I kind of think that every problem is electronic in high mileage cars. But I'm stumped by this one.

last night I took the car on a run to see some friends about 45 minutes each way. The speedo worked all the way, it changed correctly into fifth gear so cruised at 60mph at 2000rpm and the C/S button worked as did manual lever change up down.
I'm hoping that once these wheel speed sensors are changed it will be like that all the time as well as getting rid of the ABS and engine warning dash lights.
