W212 5G 722.6 flush or oil change?

Hi All,

I have a 2010 W212 E220 CDI with a 722.6 5G Tronic gearbox. It has 230k km on it and sometimes the gearbox is a bit jerky when cold. The gearbox was flushed some 70k km ago as said by the previous owner, but there is no way of checking (the dealership didnt make a xentry mention of it) so I will have the oil in the gearbox replaced by my MB specialist.

They offer two options:
1) Flush it for 400 euro
2) Take out the oil and replace the oil and filters for 260 euro.

Can you tell me:
1) If you can indeed remove all the oil on this gearbox (by also draining the torque converter) or if this is not possible
2) If the flush is really worth the additional 140 euro?

Does the flush not include the filter being changed ? If it doesn’t , then don’t take that option .

Because the 5g 722.6 has the dipstick tube in the engine bay , you have the additional option of either suctioning out the gearbox sump oil by a device like the Pela 6000 , or draining the gearbox sump as you would doing an engine oil change . Then topping up the gearbox again via this dipstick tube with the same amount of oil you just removed .
This may get around the fact that your specialist may not drain the TC , or be willing to disconnect the return oil cooler pipe to the gearbox to flush the box if the TC doesn’t have a drain screw .
About half the gearbox oil is in the sump , 3.5L on my car

Im am in the Netherlands :)

If you can remove the oil from the TC, then what is really the added value of a flush over a complete oil removal and then a complete top up? And is it even technically possible in the W212 722.6 to remove the oil from the TC?

some TC have a drain plug fitted so a flush not so necessary but if not a flush is the only real way of renewing all the fluid and getting rid of any crap built up over the years

If there is a drain plug in the TC then this does not apply as all fluid is really taken out.

My question still remains: if you can remove all the oil from the gearbox, then is there a reason why a flush would still be better?

Please do not compare the scenario of a flush vs a partial oil change, only a flush vs a full oil change.

The option they have given you are, drop the pan and replace the filter and what oil has been drained (give about a 65% fluid change) or full flush, this give you a 100% change

Even draining the TC, there'll still be fluid in the cooler.

For what it's worth, If you are going down the trans oil change route, then the only worthwhile way is a complete change. IE: Trans sump, TC, Oil cooler and oil transfer pipes. In the 722.6 trans change, new oil will be pumped into the trans, and out via the one of the oil cooler pipes, so it will be flushed in any case, as the pumping / draining process involves pumping out two ltrs of old fluid, replacing it with two litres new fluid, repeating until the new fluid appears from the coolant pipe. With the 722.6 trans, its the only way to change the TC oil, as the TC itself in this model does not have drain plug. So the £260 quote is basically just filter and oil change ( not too unlike an engine oil and filter change basically) So a complete change , inc. TC Coolant Radiator and pipes, would definitely be worth the extra £140. bearing in mind that the TC and Radiator will account for 50% of the total fluid capacity.
