COMAND on anything other than something pretty recent is just awful.
As mentioned, replace it with an Android unit or just use your phone.

I don't know about the E class but on the older C class the Avantgarde had a nicer interior e.g. non-wood.

What's the difference between the standard sat nav etc and comand? How can I tell, doesn't say anything about it in the vin details.

Not sure. I think it is the same thing, Mine has Comand, and it has Sat Nav, CD, DVD and Radio.
