My 2012 E220 diesel is making a weird whirring noise when coasting. It's coming from somewhere to the rear of the cabin and stops when I apply even light light throttle.

It's kind of mid-range in terms of pitch (neither particularly high or low pitch) and starts as soon as I take my foot of the gas.

No other symptoms. 90k miles; regularly main-dealer serviced since new.

Any thoughts folks?

I have absolutely no technical knowledge but the differential springs to mind. Perhaps just needs an oil top up which may not be part of the normal service schedule. Hopefully others with more knowledge will be along soon.

That's what it was on my Omega. I just very slightly nipped up the nut that pre-loads the bearing and never had any more problems ..... obviously the bearing on Gordon's car could have failed.
