Luckily got home but as I got out the car saw a pool of red fluid gushing out the bottom of the car. Seems quite heavy and by now I think the coolant tank is empty.

What could have happened ?

Somwthing has given way perhaps....

You need to get in there and have a look.

I would be more concerned as to which temp your engine got to and if there is any head damage due to over heating.

Engine temp was 1 bar higher last night when it happened. That's when the coolant was gushing out

Makes no sense buddy.
Bar is a unit for pressure, temp would have been in F or C.

Fill it back with water till you ID the leak.

Happened to me once was the water pump, the car was steaming like crazy and the fluid was dripping on something hot. Full it up and see if it only happens when the car is up to temp.

So I've taken it to a garage. It's the something filter housing. Costing me £240. Plus they said it was weird because another pipe and clip elsewhere was disconnected, and it just has no reason to be open.

Oil filter housing? Not uncommon.

Glad you are getting sorted.

Hope it's not the fuel filter housing?
