Hey there,

I purchased a high mileage 1 owner 2018 E220d with 250k+ miles on the clock. The car was meticulously maintained EXCEPT for the gearbox oil. After calling the dealer that had it serviced its whole life, I was informed that the gearbox has never been serviced and is still running on original oil from when it left the factory, which in itself is pretty shocking and amazing at the same time.

Anyway, I phoned a few places and they all seem to be quoting £350+ for the parts only. Can anyone recommend the best place to source the full kit from at a reasonable price?

Many thanks!

eBay do the kits . Thing with the 9g is the sump , it's £180 ish just for it. Then there's the oil . And labour.

Feel free to DIY if you think it's manageable by yourself. Screenshot_20241007-152444.png

Hi, thanks for the reply! I've gone ahead and ordered it directly from Mercedes as it works out roughly the same when buying 10 litres. My mechanic said he wants to drain out the torque converter too so its good to grab 10 and not 7.

My annoyance is the fact that Mercedes did not bring this up on its warranted service interval;

The vehicle was already over 100k before the third year, why did Mercedes not conduct the initial oil change @77k miles?

Any ideas if gearbox oil in included in its warranted oil change service? I think Mercedes offer free 3 year services in house to preserve warranty.

Thanks!

The 9g gearbox I’m told by a good contact in the trade is a very robust unit and does take the miles but I’ve never heard of a situation like yours. The gearbox as you say should have been serviced at 77k miles and the dealer may have flagged this up but the owner at the time may have declined to pay the £700 or so cost of having it done. I don’t think warranty plays a part in this it’s up to the owner at the time to agree to the extra cost.

MB don’t offer 3 year service packages for free (at least you don’t really hear of it ??)
Yes the gearbox should have been done but as Malcom says above , the owner could turn it down .
Is you car an approved used MB , there might be some goodwill if it was sold as such .

I bought my last S tank at 2 years 7 months old 2015, the service history showed he had declined gearbox and fuel filter change. Got my indie to do the full works at 46k before 3 years guarantee was up. Gives you a good start point if its a keeper.

Check the date on the filter that comes out.
It may be just poor record keeping / failure to read the PC correctly.

A possible part number on the sump may prove if it's been done. It'll of changed since 2018 . The 2 filters are part of it.

I can sense a trans oil change in my recently purchased 2018 E class w213, unless I get definite proof that it was done at 77'000 miles. I've been checking it out, and it seems not too different from the 2014 7 speed transmission I had before, especially the TC drain, which for some reason, even garages seem reluctant to do? Anyone on the forum have any idea how to check the condition of the existing fluid? with the older transmissions, the ones with dipsticks, you could at least see the fluid and get a fair idea of what it was like by colour etc, but taking a sample from the 9sp trans is not so easy, unfortunately. One enterprising suggestion that I heard was to take off the undertrays, and visually check the trans sump, and if it looks new, take as given that it has been recently changed. But that means access to a Lift and removing the car under trays to have a look. If I have to do that, I'd better go the whole hog and do the change and be finished with it.
