w213 estate e220 2017 both keys not recognised

new to the forum and would appreciate some technical advice
both my keys are not recognised despite having new batteries
they both emit a red light when pressed but niether will unlock or lock the car
i have to use the emergency key to gain entry and put the fob in the hole in order to start the engine
all was well until i washed the car on thursday - started playing up on friday
i have checked everywhere and all seems bone dry
any advice would be appreciated

Looks like resetting the battery by removing the positive will sort the problem

tried that allready but no joy - thanks for the quick response!

AN UPDATE - took it into the main dealer in HULL (LISTERS) it was the key antenna amplifier which is located in the headlining behind the lighting cluster / mirror (i thought it was in the boot)
£51 for the part but £172 in labour (15 minute job) but they did have to run a diagnostic to check it all out
but at least its working for now (all plus vat @ 20%)
