I have a 2017 E220d, the message on screen was auxiliary battery malfunction. After help from this forum and others I have just fitted a new unit which I purchased from Ebay £34 with 2 year guarantee. The location is the passenger footwell as stated and takes only 30 mins to do the job, I noticed this is where the cabin pollen filter is also located.
Step 1 remove the passenger door carpet cover by pulling up.
Step 2 remove the side footwell plastic trim by pulling towards the drivers side direction.
Step 3 remove the upper cover located underneath the glove box (1 torx screw only) then pull down. be careful as there are 2 electrical connectors on this panel. (disconnect)
Roll back the carpet in the passenger footwell.
Step 4 remove 3x 10mm nuts which secure large black plastic cover over the voltage converter, lift off upwards.
Step 5 remove 1 x 10mm nut securing the converter to the mounting bracket then lift out of the lower support, disconnect the 3 pin connector, observe orientation! it does look like you could put this connector on reversed quite easily however the is a keyway in it which should prevent this happening.
Reverse above steps to finish

Hope this helps to boost anybody's confidence if they are thinking to do it themselves.

Have you checked your battery also. I had auxiliary error, got it checked and my battery was knackered. Now all good
