Hi all,

Had an issue with my W216 not starting. Ended up with an auto electrician coming out and he swapped the starter relays. Relay H in the engine bay fuse box was replaced with a new one that day, but relay J he was unable to source, so swapped it with relay F (fanfare horn). Good news is, the car starts first time every time. However, since he’s done this, I cannot get any sound out of the radio, telephone, sat nav etc. Everything works on the screen etc, but no sound.

Would anyone have any advice on where I should be looking for a problem? I’ve got the electrician coming back in a couple of weeks, but he’s fully booked up until then, so any help in the meantime would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Sam

There was a code stored from the media interface. An internal control module reset is carried out. No idea how long that’s been there, but no other codes to do with Comand or anything

Internal module reset is nothing, just indicates the thing has rebooted itself as its "hung".

Are you seeing any radio stations on the listing? If no, the amplifier/audio gatweay has failed as is common on 216/221 platforms.

Yeah all the radio stations, cds etc all appear and navigate as normal. I’m planning to unplug and test the amplifier today

Power cycle the battery, but if all the modules are working (telephone not showing unavailable etc) then it's likely the amp. Did the car sit for a while before it failed?

The car usually gets used once or twice a week, but this happened after we’d been on holiday in it using it every day for 2 weeks and putting about 1200 miles on the clock! My phone still connects automatically and I can make and receive calls (but obviously no sound). I did disconnect the battery for a while but I’ll have to plug it in to see if there a bms reset or similar on my diag. I suspected the amp as like you say it’s a fairly common issue

if the car didn't start and you swapped relay positions till it did - is the dead one still in the car causing different issues ?

but worth remembering, the Tuner Amps die all day long on these cars (two types, std small one by panasonic and the option crazy money HK logic 7 big Amp - "magically" they both die about as frequently as the other. Seldom giving up in one hit but get more and more flaky until everything on the car entertainment systems works to perfection, but there is no noise anywhere, (so Nav, TV, DAB, Aux all function as usual but there never any noise)

A few forums claim a dead TV or DAB module linked out of the fibre optic circuit bring it back to life - but so many lies and drivel out there I don't believe it - my dead Amp got progressively worse over 6 months, but a long trip where they get hot and bothered was the first time it ever played up - I got a replacement and the dead one is now 4 years older in a box - but still operates for short testing periods - the replacement has not missed a beat

New relays arrived last week from MB. Fitted these and despite keeping all my digits crossed the sound is still dead. Must be the amp I think. Several months ago, randomly I had something like ‘device unavailable’ displayed on comand screen and no radio or audio at all, but this has never happened since. Interesting what you said about the heat, especially as this all happened during the record temperatures we had.

the chips inside run at melting point and the cooling fan tries to push downhill on the small amp !!!!

they flow 1/3 rd the air flow it needs - miraculous they last as long as they do
