Thought I’d do a little write up on my little upgrade on my cls320cdi, at some point a Mercedes dealer (who shall remain nameless) have replaced a front calliper for a previous owner with a different design so both front stoppers we’re different! I decided come disc/pad replacement time I’d replace the caillipers too for my own piece of mind.
Lucky they used the same 312mmx26mm disc and pad!
Looking at different discs available I found the petrol models (apart from 55/63 AMGs) and w211 e320cdi sport models had larger 330x32mm discs so decided to upgrade to the larger ones. So I found a set of rebuilt callipers from a CLS500 for just £3 more expensive than the “correct” callipers.
Masked any mating surfaces and give them a lick of appropriately named silver arrow calliper paint, followed by a high temp decal and a few coats of clear
Decided I wanted some drilled discs like the more modern Mercedes and the older “AMG sport” w211s and I wanted coated brakes to stop that ugly rust ruining the look. I ended up going with EBC red stuff pads, MTEC drilled and silver coated discs that look amazing! Along with MTEC braided lines.
Fitting is easy as they bolt right up. All other suspension parts are the same between the petrol and diesel models, But for some reason Mercedes decided to fit smaller brakes to the heavier diesel cars... unless you have a sport e320cdi
After wearing in the discs and pads I gave the wheel well a proper detail and coating. The callipers were ceramic coated before I put them on the car to help make them easier to clean.
Rear discs/callipers being the same between all models apart from AMG I simply have the callipers a wire brush and a lick of paint, I was a little unsure if I could keep the rear discs solid like most modern mercs with front drilled but I opted to have them all drilled in the end.
And a chance to give the wheels a proper clean while they were off the car.
Really happy with how the upgrade turned out, braking performance is massively improved as well as a big reduction in brake fade (few stops from dual carriageway speed with the old factory stuff and you knew about it!!!) the larger discs also help fill out the wheels a lot bigger in my opinion looking great and really making the car look that little bit more modern.
