Hi Malcolm,

The tale is quite a long one, so here goes.

The car is a 2001 reg S320 CDI

Before Christmas, my heater blower fan stopped working, the fault being that water had entered the chassis via an air vent. I subsequently found out that this was a problem with this model, and took it to the dealer to have the recall done (I also had the heater blower replaced).

I then experienced problems with starting the car - namely that it would not start after a cold spell and would throw up spurious warning messages on the dash (ESP, ECP Bas etc), unless I jump started it. This pointed to a faulty battery - which I changed, but the same problem is occuring.

I took it back to the dealer, who plugged it into their diagnostic kit, and was told that there was a problem with a contact somewhere, which was probably caused by the original leak.

Upon inspection, I found that the passenger footwell (where the blower fan is located) was full of water close to a cable tray which is located at the side of the footwell.

I would like to know if there are any ECU's in this area, so that I can inspect the connection, as MB estimate that it would cost over 500 GBP in labour alone to look at the fault, which they admit may or may not be the cause of my starting problems.

I hope that this is sufficient information for you.

Regards,

Roy

Ouch, where do you start. On most MB's the signals for the speed sensors are in the passenger footwell behind the kick panel. these cables come from and to the front SAM (signal aquasision module) without these signals all of your speed sensitive functions like ESP,BAS etc will come into play.

I would disconnect the battery and with a warm air gun dry all of the connectors. Any water or moisture on these data buses, ODB11 and CAN will knock them all out. Even the heater is operated within the CAN bus, as all of these buses are paralell conected, any shorts (water) kills the whole network.

As above. You should look for CAN joining points. These are wires that look like speaker wires. Interior CAN wires have a brown wire + a brown/red wire. Chassis CAN wires are green + green/white. Trace these to a black plastic joining block about 3" long arond the sill area. If there is ANY signs of corrosion here, buy new ones, a couple of quid from MB.

I had problem with water penetration on my S320 (2001)
the recall on the heater box (full of water) had been done but ......too much rain , or the wrong type of rain caused the electrical problems  . The recall should have been done in early 2005. If they didnt inform you or do it as a matter of routine when being serviced(they would'nt even tell you if they did it.. believe me..... been down this road...) then I would query the late recall to fix the problem.
The alternator regulator on the S class when faulty throws up the ESP,BAS,ABS, faults and battery goes flat. Is there a battery warning fault ? The alternator +labour = £600 , alternator regulator = £60 (part and labour).

Get them to look at the alternator regulator. here......part 47..http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...GA=722.618&CT=M&cat=19Y&SID=15&SGR=030&SGN=02

cheers

Correction to above......

The recall should have been done in early 2004, not 2005. Mine was done in April 2004 before I got the car
