My W220 S500 runs perfectly and returns normal mpg, but in the last few days I have done a couple of long runs and could smell petrol as soon as I got out of the car. It seems worse around the front passenger door, although I can see no sign of leaks or drips. Can anyone help, or tell me where the fuel pump, filter, breathers etc. or other suspect areas are? Thanks

I have now discovered the area of the leak. Under the car, there is a black plastic bowl shaped cover approx 1 foot diameter, directly below the rear nearside seat, and petrol is dripping (with engine running), from a hole in the centre of it. Before I get under the car, can someone tell me what's inside this cover, and how to get it off please. Thanks

C220GJS What a star! many thanks. Thanks for the link to the diagrams.. I'll have a look when I have the use of a 4 post lift on Tuesday, and post my findings. Thanks again.

The problem was a hairline crack in the end of the fuel filter. Replacement fitted (local motor factors £36) and job sorted.
