Hi,

I have sold my w210 E220CDi and bought a W220 S320L (2000 MDL). All is fine (bar fuel Economy..... ). I have noticed that as I drive there is a humming noise from the front offside of the car that can be heard internally. I thought it might be the wheel bearing but it sounds more like a motor humming. The car has 62K on the clock. Anyone know if this is the norm?. Apart from the hum (speed increases the noise) the car is silent

Wheel bearing is the first place to check. Jack the car up and spin the wheel - it should turn smoothly, also check there's no play. If you can jack up the other side, so have a comparison point, even better.
If the steering was pulling, I'd also check the brakes to ensure they weren't sticking

As Carabind says ,should be wheel bearings, we have had 2 go this week.
by jacking the car and turning the wheels slowly, if you can feel the balls as the wheel rotates, then it has gone, easy job to replace. The humming noise can normally be heard from 30-50 MPH and sounds more in the car than out.

Thanks guys.

Im off to my mates garage to check it out in the morning.....

I called the indie that service the car with the previous owner, he said the car was fine as it had a full service in Sept. He said the nosie could be the airmatic pump motor as it is on the driver side of the car....

Gulp.... better get the savings bonds ready to be cashed in

If the noise is only there sometimes,it could be the SBC brake pump, and that's normal, I think that you do have SBC

Went to my friends garage yesterday to check out the wheel bearings. They were fine. On the test drive we noticed that the noice started at exactly 30mph and that it is only there for a a few minutes. When we got the the dual carriageway it disappeared. Def sounds like a motor. I think it could be a noisy Airmatic pump.....:(

Hi E220

I have a W220 same specs as yourself, you do find when you first start travelling in the car that beyond the silence it sometimes makes what I would describe as hydraulic motor type sounds, I've now learned to ignore them, it sounds like the car is adjusting itself, turn the car off and just sit in it for 5 minutes after you take the key out and listen to the amount of adjustments the car makes as it settles itself.

Possibly completely normal, and enjoy it, fantastic car.

ps malcolm, what are SBC brakes?

Hi, sorry to jump on this thread but I am curious if I have the same thing.

I have a '04 E Class and have had a weird noise from under the bonnet (offside) since I got it. It sounds like a compressor/pump and it is deffo related to my brakes. If I sit in the car and press the brake pedal 2 or 3 times it starts 'pumping' and stops after 10-15 seconds. If I am in slow traffic it is doing this every 2 minutes or so. The thing is it is very noisy and I can feel the vibration through the foot well so it is very annoying.

Sometimes I only have to turn the alarm off and open the drivers door for it to start (without the key even being in!!).

While I was at my local garage the other day collecting the wifes motor I asked the mechaninc what he thought and he said it is related to the ABS but said it should be booked in and looked at by Merc as it might be 'normal'.

Has anyone got any experinece of this and if it is a fault is it repairable under warranty, I ask as I have booked it in to MB this week and want to be forearmed.

Thanks again, Neil

Yours does have SBC brakes and it will be that causing the noise. There is a dealer mod that makes the brakes quieter although not silient. This is one of the reasons that it was dropped on the facelift model.

The mod for this is fitting a damper to the pump and should have been done under a re call, this proved to be an expensive exercize for MB. It was not dropped on the grounds of noise on the E Class, as it is still on all of the flagship cars, indeed I can hear the pump in the garage, before i start the car,but have never heard it inside ever. MB's policy on this is that more development is needed before it hits the mass market cars like the E Class and it is too expensive. I had the MB link to this before my computer went down.

Driving the car with SBC is supurb and very clever,in the rain the pads just come out enough to dry the disc, I like it.

Hi, thanks to you both for the information.

Am I right in thinking that it will be looked at under warranty then, the car is still less than 3 years old?

Obviously I want to avoid a huge bill.

Thanks,

Neil

In the USA all owners have had a letter from MB stating that the pump has a 10 year guarantee.

In the uk the pump if faulty is chargable £600. The mod under the re call is for the damper and new T piece on the pump, not the pump its self. It should be under warranty.

Hi, well the dealer visit proved as you would expect. They told me it is 'normal' and is indeed the pump re-pressurising.

Apparently the recall only applied to certain chassis numbers thats why mine has not had it done.

I am going back to collect the car tomorrow, while I am there I am going to ask to listen to another car just to put my mind at rest, as I cannot believe something to loud and annoying is classed as 'normal' on a MB.

That noise

Hello it sounds like i have the same noise on my 54 plate e 220 cdi
Its around the 30 MPH mark
It had the noise when i got the car, i thought it was a sticky break pad
then a wheel baring the dealers had it for 1 day and did about 100 miles of test driving and couldnt find the problem.
I use the car for chauffeur work and people are asking what it is so its going back in on the 15th until its fixed
I think it could be tyre noise as someone took the mitchlins off and put some £50.00 each wanis on
atleast i hope thats what it is then i can put my mind at rest
