My 2001 S-Class has developed a squeak when turning the steering wheel.
MB stealership say that it is common fault they know about and are trying to develop an oil to cure the problem. Apparently the seal on the steering box does not get properly lubrication and this causes the squeak as the steering wheel gets turned. The answer at the moment is to replace the seal at great expense...to me... as stealership don't want to do it under warranty.
I have been told WD40 and the likes only makes the noise worse.
Has anyone else had this problem, or does anyone have a cure.

possible causes of a squeak or noise: Parts of the steering linkage are loose and need to be tightened; your tires are hitting or rubbing against something; Something is rubbing against or hitting the steering column or mercedes steering rack; or you have worn suspension parts.

the dealership are trying to develop an oil ?????....wow they're keen !

seriously though if the dealership diagnosis is correct then surely this is not something that the owner should have to pay to rectify.

The reason they are trying to develop an oil is to save them the cost of having to repair all the squeaking seals under warranty.....
The squeak in not due to any wear etc it is the seal at the steering rack.
