Hi, my father has suddenly decided he wants a W222. Probably a diesel, but I'm not keen on the OM642, so I presume it would need to be a facelift? Any idea on the minium spec, I assume Burmester and surround parking Cameras are pretty essential?

If people could just chuck in any advice/personal experiences that would be great, cheers.

What is wrong with the OM642?
I've got one in my W211, it's been very well maintained by the previous owner too. I just don't think it's a great engine TBH, thirsty, difficult to work on with numerous issues around oil seals, actuators, cam chains etc.

A straight 6 is more efficient, sounds better and is easier to work on, plus the turbo is better situated.

In 15 years they may have improved it a little

Isn't an S500 very thirsty? He's 73 and doesn't drive like an idiot, but I think less than 35 mph on a run would be disappointing.

Plus, what make of tyres would Merecdes have supplied an W222 with?

Should easily get more than 35mph...
Low to mid 30's mpg should also be achievable

I'd pick the 4.7ltr twin turbo V8 over any of the diseasals any day of the week. I'm guessing your father won't be covering 20K miles plus per year so a V8 petrol without any ad-blue or hybrid nonsense would be one fine place to spend your retirement.

S500 with 9,000 miles!

S500E - 3.0ltr plug in hybrid nonsense

Thanks BC, I saw that. Is the spec a bit weak though?
It very much depends upon what he's wanting toys wise, lots of toys are available and there's always quite a few coming to the market. I'd decide on what it as absolute must have then keep searching until one turns up.

The 4.7ltr bi-turbo is a very good engine - there's quite a few members on here with it
Mercedes has it as the basis for a lot of vehicles now. I'd definitely have one :)

I wouldn't try one if you want a diesel

This, short journeys will not be good for a 350d, petrol every day

Ok, thanks guys. Time for a think. The S500 is realistically going to average 28-30 mpg, but seems better value. I agree about Adblue and all the other emssion stuff on the diesel.

How many miles is he likely to cover per year?

Because I like a nice spreadsheet I've just done a comparison for you based on 110ppl petrol and 118ppl diesel over a few different annual mileages. Not much in it is there...

All it takes is a NOx sensor (and diesels seem to love them) and any savings for a diesel are gone.
