I believe the problems are more related to the earlier dry clutch versions and not the newer wet clutch ..... but that's only what I've gleaned from the web

Same here: nearly all of the diesels use the wet clutch system too according to my research.

Curve ball, but there are quite a lot of MLs out there for that money. At least 20 on Autotrader between £7 and £7.5k, typically around the 60 / 11 plate. Would give you the raised driving position, diesel, proper 7 speed auto and plenty ofospace! May be more to run though so not sure how that fits with your budget.
Like your out the box thinking buddy , good call :D

I've had a CVT A200 C169 for almost five years now.
Essentially it's the same car as W245, with a slightly different body shell.

I've had no problem with transmission, and if looked after properly, it should be fine (in my opinion).
I actually prefer smooth changes of CVT, but then I seriously dislike, and don't drive, manual.

Above mentioned door rust on pre-2009 models, and rear glass panels obscuration band bonding issue (specific to the coupe version, bizarrely) are my main complaints.

When we moved house this summer, even I was surprised at the size of furniture / other bulky stuff, I was able to transport in this car.
