Just took my CLK for it's first proper long run.

Very occassionally, while loping along at a steady 85, the car
seemed to move slightly one way on a nice straight piece of motorway.

Just like being hit by a crosswind, but there didn't seem to be any wind.

All very strange, and when I corrected the movement, it seemed to take
a relatively large movement of the wheel to get any steering input.
Like I said all this was very slight, and if fact was not even felt
by my passengers.

Anyone aware of this effect ??... is the CLK particularly effected by crosswinds ?

Thanks.

Tramlining? There are stretches of the M6 which are not 100% flat and are prone to this. Tramlining is a feature of tyres and not the car - and cannot be cured, apart from changing tyres.

Does this happen often? Or only at "some" places...

I have the same problem!
however when i changed my wheels from 18in back to the 16in it improved.
But i didn't like the 16's so i changed them back to my Barabus monoblock 5's and just live with the problem!
They do look nice!

my 17'' wheels tend to tramline. The old 16'' didn't. Not sure whether it's the extra width or the shorter sidewall but the difference is very noticable.
I still love the look of them though and it's not too bad that I can't live with it.
What price vanity....

I think - and I may be wrong in this - but this has something to do with the softness of sidewalls, not the size of the tyres. I had 18" Bridgestone RE-040 on my Mazda RX-8 which tended to tramline a LOT. Changing to Toyo Proxies or Pirelli P-Zeros (which is what I have on the CLK At the moment) brought immediate relief.
