I have a 1975 MB 280SE purchased new with 133 000 Km on the clock. It was assembled in South Africa.

A low speeds up to 70 Km/hr the steering wanders badly from side to side. It has been like this from new and several tyre changes and alignments have not fixed the problem. The steering box was changed under warranty due to knocking but to no affect on this problem. The MB dealer could not fix this problem when under warranty.

The steering box adjustment is fine there being mininum backlash and recently the steering damper was changed again to no effect. No wear can be detected in the steering joints oand the wheel bearing adjustment is fine.

At higher speeds the problem all but dissapears but not entirely

Any ideas please?

Assuming the front end of the car is correct I'd look at whatever controls track at the rear of the car as it may be steering from the rear
