Guys,

My brother needs to get an estate car, the newly found benefit of having kids means his Megane Sport is no longer sufficient! So he is looking for a C-Class Estate.

The budget is 5k and it needs to be any colour but red or white.

He is looking for something like a C180/C200 or a C220 CDI. Petrol or diesel he is not bothered.

Does anybody know of any good examples that are around? Added toys such as sat nav or cd changer would be a benefit but not essential. If anyone can post any links to particular cars or good garages I would appreciate your help in helping him join the elite club that is Mercedes benz ownership!

Cheers guys!

I am also looking for one for my brother - similar situation to your brother's. Looking around it appears that C270CDIs are cheaper than C220CDIs - cars with less than 80k miles on 52 or 03 plates are selling for between £4 and £5k. I think that the market is a bargain at the moment. If he is not bothered about petrol of diesel, how about a C320 petrol, these are going even cheaper. I am trying to persuade my brother to go down the petrol route, as I think that it represents a lower cost of ownership

A nice looking one owner C270cdi ended on ebay today - it had 93k miles on an 02 plate, bidding went to £3600 and it didn't meet its reserver (it had a buy it now price of £5500) I didn't get a chance to look at it, however, if he relists, I recon that 4500 would be an excellent price. Beware that there are 3 cars on autotrader (2 C220 CDIs and a C270CDI all estates) which are a con trick - seller recently emigrated to cypress / new york car is RHD so can't sell over there.... yea right!

Don't know if it will interest you or not, but a pal of mine has been bringing some W202 C Class estates in from Japan. They are all very low mileage - circa 35K - and absolutely no rust at all, not a spot!! All come with Jap Merc dealer history (not as difficult to interpret as you might think). I bought one myself as I could not believe the condition of the things after looking after so many rusty UK examples, as I do. All '98, '99 or 2000 vintage, all with electronic climate control, some with leather. His number - 01403 780801. Ask for Denis.

S203 C180 auto estate 2001 (sold)
I bought a C180 W203 auto estate last year (aug 2001 model). This model has the 2 litre non turbo engine and is quite thirsty, 28 mpg average. Corrosion on wheel arches and doors is another problem. Co2 is also 235G/KM which puts it in the higher rate for taxation (when introduced). Overall a good car and now a reasonable price but would aim for a turbo version.

Hi

I know this is a Merc forum but for a budget of £5k i'd tell him to also consider a VW Passat estate as an option. They are BIG estate cars.

You can pick up an 04 or 05 Highline model from a dealer (leather interior & lots of toys) for around £5k.

Worth considering - I know it might not be a Merc, but's it's still German engineering and a big improvement over a Renault Megane! lol

Before I call, what kind of price range are we talking about?

They have been £4000 to £5000, depending on engine, spec etc. Sounds quite expensive, but condition has to be seen to be appreciated. They have been selling quite well -8 sold, only 2 left, both silver, C240 elegance, black electric leather, climate, no sunroof and a C200 with black cloth, climate, no sunroof, tiptronic box. He also has year 2000 A190 cubanite? (guessing) with anthracite leather, 2400 miles only (two thousand, four hundred), documentation to prove. Worth ringing for a chat - he would like these gone before christmas...
