hi everyone, can anyone reccomend a good merc. electrics / electronics inde within 20 miles of preston in lancs, who can diagnose eng. / autobox problems. ? the car is a 1997 e-300 eleg. with 190,000 miles. here a lot on forum about the "MAF", ECU'S, SENSORS, etc. i am targetting the electrics as the the engine's loss of power is intermittant as is the autobox operation. the tick over and revs in neautral are ok, when you start driving it is plucking and jerking, the next day it can be ok for a while ? many thanks for any help received. herbiemercman.

we are just like normal customers, normal people.

I know faults are sometimes hard to find, but if we fitted parts which did not cure the fault we would just remove said parts. therefore no charge to customer. Dont understand how people still get away with it.

however i have diagnosed cars before and because of the cost of the fix customer did not want to go ahead with job. part was too expensive for him(petrol airmass). he did not want to pay diagnosis as "we had not fixed it", try to work out the logic in that!

so sometimes its not always garage or dealers that dont make sense

hi mbtech, i have just visited your site and it looks impressive. am i correct in assuming that following your diagnocis you insist on supplying and fitting the parts ? i am also assuming you only use mb parts ? the problem is for me that the cost of the diag. is circa £50. and a mb supplied MAF is £185. total bill £235. i have a problem with the MAF on my car, at least i think it is the MAF as when i disconnected it as advised for free by an mb member, the car recovered it's performance. i was also advised by another member that a company in essex who specialise in MAF's supply one for £35 with a 3 yr guar. many of the postings explain very simple cures for eng. management probs, such as cleaning wiring looms, cleaning the ecu, replacing "o"rings and oil seals, disconnecting the MAF, one member was quoted £400 for a new ecu, which he repaired with decontaminating with a solvent, etc. you obviously have the star set up etc. and if you are prepared to inform the customer what is wrong with their car, then they should be happy to pay the diagn. fee and decide if they are making the repairs or agreeing to your quote for lab / parts. herbiemercman.

I took my (petrol) car to my local Indie and just asked him to read off the codes and give me a bit of a steer (cheeky but if you don't ask........)
Having run the same test as you (MAF unplygged, runs a treat. MAF on runs ok but very sluggish and temperamental gear changes)
One run on STAR, for £45, several readings gave the experts to believe it was indeed the MAF........ Although MAF shorted to ground was quote a clear error!
He then advised me only to use the Bosch version replacement, ran through the rest of the stored codes, took the car for a spin, mentioned the clonking drop links and gave me a quite for changing the auto box fluid when I'm ready as the car is at 46k.

So, for £45, lots of advice, help reassurance and encouragement...... But if i handed him the car he would have refunded my £45 then charged me for fitting a replacement MAF.
I'm sure any Indie would do that for you?
Although lots and lots of people have warned me off £cheap MAFs. Even with a warranty, if it went faulty, you'd end up having it starred again, then have to send the unit back.... More £blown! So, I'm waiting until I have a spare £120 (eurocarparts discount price) and getting the right bit of kit....... Once.
