I proudly own a new SL 350, which has the DVD unit introduced in 2004.

I have installed a Nokia phone which is working fine and which is WAP enabled.

Here's my problem. The Mercedes-Benz DVD/navigation/phone system should be able to receive WAP from my phone but nobody knows how to set it up. Not Mercedes, Nokia or Orange. :x

Can anyone out there help me to get this feature working :?:

Thanks all!

A good question. I have just had a new Nokia mobile and the WAP option now appears on my COMAND menu under SERV but I have not got much further than that. The manual is not much help. Has anyone got WAP working in the UK?

WAP on W220 - First step successful

I started researching things and here is how far I got. I tested my WAP (Motorola Bluetooth, Euro Comand, UK) using a Vodafone pay-as-you-go SIM and an O2/BT contract SIM.

The O2 SIM comes from a Blackberry where it gives me GPRS and G3 access to mail and all of the internet - unlimited. However, I could not make that work at all so far. Nothing at all ... sad. Mind you, the W220 Comand only works with GSM as far as I can tell.

However, I got somewhere with the Vodafone SIM. I have the right number to call and get authenticated with the standard userid and password. Once online my car phone shows "data call in progress" on the display and the line to the internet stays up steadily until it times out according to the setting I entered:

Under WAP/Settings/Connection:
Connection time-out: 2 minutes

Once connected I should be able to get the WAP sites and http://www.google.com is renowned to have a good WAP service (when it detects being called by a WAP device). I enter the ADDRESS (URL) in Comand and request the URL by pressing OK (twice, the first accepts the address and transfers it to the bottom of the screen, the second OK calls that page).

Then I get the message "Loading Page" and after a while a 404-error occurs (.... page may no longer be there .... settings wrong ... contact admin). When pressing the REFRESH button on Comand I get the same message again (no surprise there), but I am close to cracking it. All WAP URLs I tried display the same 404-error.

Once the page has been displayed (even though with an error) I can press the SAVE button and then this URL turns up under FAVORITES (there is a button for it). So far so good. I wonder what is wrong here. I assume the IP gateway address is wrong and changed it. With any other gateway IP a request for a URL hangs - the display shows "Loading Page" and nothing happens.

Interestingly, I can change the gateway IP address back to what it was, while the data call is still active, and then I get the "familiar" 404 error again. Does anyone know a better IP gateway address for Vodafone? Does the pay-as-you-go SIM trick me into believing I have data access via GSM, although I do not?

My working settings are as follows under WAP/Settings/Access:

Profile: Vodafone (actually any name you like)
Username user@vodafone.net
Password user
Phone Number +447836900808
Roaming number: empty
Port: 9201
Data Call Type: ISDN
IP Address: 212.183.137.012
Homepage: http://wap:1999/vodafone.wml

The homepage does not seem to matter. Even with rubbish there I can connect to Vodafone. If you leave it empty, the HOME button is greyed out.

Funny: when a page is displayed (even the 404 error page) I can press the READER button and Comand voice computer reads the page to me in English, but with a German accent. You will laugh!

Can all of you give it a try with your SIM cards? Get your settings from here: http://www.filesaveas.com/wap.html

WAP settings

As a follow-up from the previous post, and as advice to all of you who will try WAP now, I left the existing connection profile (ISP dial-up) intact and added for my connection attempts separate Profiles. Comand allows you to have 10 of these. It seems that Comand takes the first in the list as default if all you do is press FAVOURITES, select a URL and then press GO – while you are not yet online. The easiest way is press ACCESS first, select the profile you test (e.g., Vodafone) and press the HOME button. Once the data line is up you can call any URL and Comand will not start another ISP/connection while you are already online (until you time out as per the setting under WAP/Settings/Connection.

By the way, the previous owner did not give the PROFILE a name so it did not show up in the list of profiles. This confused me because it remains the prime profile as it is first in the list. I recommend the following: when you press WAP/SETTINGS/ACCESS you do not choose the NEW button (as I did) but you choose the CHANGE button. Then the default settings come up. Give the profile a name and you will never be confused by that invisible profile.

What are your current settings? Does it work?

My predecessor left me the car with a FREENET connection with all parameters such as the password set. The telephone number is a short code though and does not work with my SIMs. Does anyone know the dial-up number of FREENET? They seem to provide broadband these days and no longer dial-up.
