Hi all
I have an SL500 with 20,500 miles which is just coming up to 3years old and therefore the manufactures' warranty is just about to expire. I do about 6,000 miles a year.
I was thinking about buying an extended warranty. Mercedes of Brighton have quoted me £1459.00 incl VAT for a tier1. Not sure how extensive there warranty is. Someone else suggested WarrantyDirect which is about half the price.
Any ideas please?

Thanks

Tony

My first quote with Warranty Direct was for over £400, eventually got it down to £240.

You can negotiate with warranty direct - I got a few quid of one a few years ago.
But - do read carefully. WD warranties normally list what is covered. It looks good but I will guarantee that whatever fails won't be listed. E.g they'll list that an ECU is covered, but a failure caused by a seal won't be covered because they don't cover seals. Mine wouldn't pay out for a dash cluster because it wasn't on the list. Who'd have thought to look?
The MB one will list what is not covered, hence, if its not on the list, you're safe. It normally says tyres, brake pads etc so you know where you are.
I bought one like this (not MB but supplied by the main dealer when I bought the car) for my 270 and was quite happy when I had a couple of problems reported at last week's service. The cruise control stalk has failed and it needs a rear axle/diff seal - all ok and covered afaik.

What I didn't realise was that 'pipes' aren't covered. Well ok, so what, given that a pipe is a cheap and easy thing to swap. A power steering coolant pipe has sprung a leak. I'm looking at 2 hours labour to fix it £200+ (all the rads need dismantling), no idea what the part costs, and no help from the warranty. So despite forking out for an expensive warranty I am now looking at fighting a claim against MB themselves.

Thus far I'd have been better banking the money and using it to pay for repairs.

Banking the cash and "self insuring" is always an option and has been my preferred route for some years now. Happily, I have not been disappointed.

Going to the head of this thread, an SL500 at 3 years of age and 20,500 miles - I think £1495 sounds a lot for the warranty (even before studying what's in and what's out). It does not speak well of the dealer who sold this car for megabucks 3 years ago, has serviced it since and now seems to lack confidence that it will continue to run correctly.

If I was buying a car of that type, age and mileage I would expect the "signature" arrangements for one year, and self insure thereafter.
