In the box behind the fuses. it does all the timed electrical functions, the turn indicators and delay wipe/wash etc.
Its an electronic thing (a bit larger than a fag packet) with very sensitive inputs, a bit of damp can make it miss behave a lot.

Slightly different problem

Forgive me hijacking this post, but I've got a problem that might be related. On my 93 220TE the wipers operate intermittently at random times when the engine is running. It occurs almost every time I indicate, but it can also start for no apparent reason.

It's not simply the intermittent function being activated, as it often does a double sweep. I've removed and checked the wiper/indicator switch and it seems fine. I've also removed the controller box and checked it and can find no problem. It's bone dry and spotless inside and I remade some of the relevant solder joints in case there was a dry joint there that I just couldn't see.

None of this has helped. I thought it might be a problem with the contol box socket fuse box, but plenty of fiddling does not seem to affect it either way.

Curiously, so far it only seems to happen when the engine is running; when the ignition is on and the engine off, the problem doesn't seem to occur.

All suggestions gratefully received.

Nmacc as it happens only when u indicate, and both indicators and wipers are on the same stalk..it may be just wear in the stalk or a build up of copper filings ..try spraying it with switch cleaner and see what happens

Thanks, I wish it was that simple, but the switch is spotless and I can't generate any kind of a short between the contacts, no matter how hard I try. Everything seems to test perfectly, even when the ignition is on; but as soon as I start the engine, the fault usually re-appears. It's not strictly tied to the indicators, this morning it started of its own accord about 10 seconds after I left the driveway.

The obvious source would seem to be the indicator/wiper/HRW control box. Any form of contamination could be expected to trigger the intermittent wipe monostable, but it's also spotless with no visible dry joints, etc. I'm going to try & track down a spare and swap it out.

The control box looks identical to that in my old 190 and does have a 201 number. Does anyone know if they're the same?

Did you check the contact mechanism after you pulled the steering wheel off ??

I guess your car has the driver airbag and I believe there is the newer clock spring design for the contacts - can that be the problem area ????????

Worth another look in my opinion.

Is there not a relay somewhere under the bonnet?, you will hear it clicking from outside the car when wiper is turned on to the intermitted setting, it might be worth checking this out.

Also, you might have a look inside the motor gearbox, see first two pictures in post #17… HERE in the first picture, switch 1 (Park Position, wipers off, switch 1 should not be in contact with the rail) might be just touching the rail when it should not be or as kth286 mentioned copper or brass fillings present. You could clean the area and re grease. Your motor will likely be a different design, but will work in much the same way as this one.
