Never had a washing mitt - as opposed to dirty old sponge - and am wondering how well they work. What are they made of? Anyone recommend a particular one? Grateful for any feedback.

I treated myself to a Turtle Wax microfibre mitt, £6.99 from Halfrauds.
It's OK, I find using it like a sponge works better for me than using it as a glove. I tend to change hands quite a bit when washing the car, perhaps I need two?

Get two from Halfords, one for washing, and the other one for polishing/shining when polish is dry ;)

2005 C270CDi Avantgarde Estate. Bought 2005, sold 2022.
I bought a lambswool one from Walmart in the US for not very much to see what all the fuss was about.
Only used it on my daughters solid red Colt and seems OK - the point is they hold grit and so doesn't scratch the car. However, it's quite hard to release the grit from it and soon looks mucky. I usually use a brush anyway.

It doesn't seem to cause swirling, but the dealer washed her car when in for a service and left the paint looking like someone has ice-skated on it.

I put quite a large scratch on my car when a piece of grit was in the sponge, so have used a mitt since then.:(

Using a mitt seems a bit strange at first but I think it actually allows the car to be cleaned a bit quicker as it covers a larger area with each sweep. I would recommend you try using a mitt for yourself.

This guy will tell you how to use a mitt! takes a while to watch but worth it, also if you get into detailing you won't stop just at the Mitt! Enjoy your mitt and go with the 'least evasive method' 'whilst reducing the potential' ;)

I'd recommend the Meguiars washmitt. It's made from a deep pile microfibre but is a bit more pricey at around £8.

You won't find better quality than these ones, Excellent service and top price at 2 for £12 delivered!!
I went for the ones without the thumb then you can use both sides,
http://www.sheepskinshop.co.uk/productlisting.aspx?cid=42&pid=22&c=Wash%20and%20Polish%20Mitts

This where i bought mine, I bought the ones with the thumbs, which is not a good idea, I think the full mitt would be better, you could then turn it over on the same hand!

I use the two bucket wash system, simply a black coloured bucket for dipping / washing your mitt in, before going to the white coloured bucket which contains your shampoo mix for washing the car. I bought a new power washer which is set at 120 lb pressure so as not to damage the paint work, I never point the jet directly at the paint work, and I've never had cleaner cars until now.

I actually got my car to look like it was a different shade of blue, i got that much dirt of the paint.

Any how I think the sheepskin mitts are great.

Cheers

;)
