hi all, newbie here.

Ever since i have owned my 1993 190E i find that after heavy rain or when there has been long periods of rain, rain water has somehow found its way into the boot skin, behind the number plate... everytime i lift the lid, the water travels along and falls from the holes in the hinges on the boot lid.

I have tried to find the entry point for the rain, by using a hose and my son-in-law in the boot with a torch...

The 3 pointed star on the back has its white gromits and the badge is the right way up... donated by the arrow on the reverse of the badge.

The rear lock has slight play, but does have the rubber seal.

The rubber seals that are all around the inside lip of the boot is fine and not damaged in anyway and does seal the boot lid when closed.

Can anyone help me with this problem. I did a search for water leaks but found nothing particular to my problem

Thanks in advance.

Mercedes 190 Leak in Boot

:p Yes Mate had the same problem in my 190E constant water leaks. I checkesd the same things as you the only way i sorted the problem was to change the seals. the holes may not be visable but changing the seals resolved the problem for me..

Hi Bhav,

Do you mean the seals along the inside lip of the boot? I'll have to try that. Is it worth buying new from Merc or would i save some money and get them from MK or somewhere like that? I'm in Birmingham.

i didn't have time to post this before i did it, but i changed the rubber seal in the door lock not the rubber seal around the boot lip. The lock seal only cost 45p so i thought i'd try that first.

It appears to have done the trick! :D it has been raining on the weekend and i checked it and i got no rain in my boot.

BTW: when i fitted the lock back, i made sure the lock was pushed (hard) as far forward as i could force it, then i tightened the bolts... maybe had i tried that first, it may have solved the problem.

Hi Shinda - just seen this post and i have EXACTLY the same problem! It has been bugging me for months now and I replaced the inner rubber seal to no effect whatsoever.
I was beginning to think it was a porous boot skin
I'll try the lock rubber this w/end if it's only 45p! Presumably this was the problem and your boot is still dry?

Whoops forgot to ask - how exactly do i remove/replace the lock and seal? I don't have a manual at present so i need a serious idiots guide if possible

if u got a spoiler, check that as well, they are usually screwed to bootlid and therefore can work slightly loose

swimming pool for 190E

After the recent (and indeed, ongoing) monsoon here in tropical Dublin I have discovered a swimming pool in the boot of my 190E. Not quite the luxury feature it sounds sadly!

I was about to replace the whole boot seal until I read this so I'll start with the lock (which I have had my suspicions about before!)

Looks like a bit of a design fault...

Thanks guys

Take out your rear lights & re seal them in with a non setting putty like DUM Dum paste, it cured both of my cars
