... just a splash, upon coming to a stop after a shortish journey, from a little pipe (overflow?) that seems to lead from water pump. radiator level dash light comes on occasionally, coincident with coolant 'leak'. topping up expansion tank makes light go off. is this a sign of the water pump about to fail? i'd kinda like to know in advance. many thanks for any advice/experience ....

car is 190E 1.8l

If you mean the small hole on the underside of the pump. then yes the pump is faulty. This happened to my 2.0 190E.
The pump is a dawdle to change.

It took me a while to find the hole and I kept blaming a hose or loose hose clip but there is a hole there

welcome to Mercedes ownership  My 300TE waterpump is on its last legs too. For some reason I see this one happening a lot more on a Mercedes than other brands ;-). The good news is a replacement pump is easily available and it will (in my experience) deteriorate slowly so you can choose when you do the job. While you are at it think about front crankshaft seal and the ancillary belt as they become (briefly) quite accessible.
