Hi Y'all just driving down the road ,and suddenly noticed lack of power ,car overheating ( in the red ) lifted bonnet engine running , horrible whining noise I supect waterpump just looking for other ideas and confirmation if poss. There was coolant leaking out but I'm positive it was coming from the header cap ,due to excess pressure. Let me know what you all think before I spend out on water pump . Also if it is waterpump how easy is it to replace I'll have a go if its straight forward (ie; no special tools)
Cheers guys and galls look forward to response !

Does sound like a seized w/pump IMO, but slip the belt off and check the other pulleys for stiffness/roughness in turning.

Hi

This is a common problem im starting to find out now, the impeller (plastic) breaks up and doesnt turn resulting in overheating and power loss. I recently had the same problem in France see attached photograph and link to other thread.

New MB pum now has an aluminium, impeller.

Good luck,

I remember reading somewhere that the 210 series has an inherent cooling problem but the article didn't elaborate. Seeing the photograph explains everything.

How long did the pump last?

Looks like I'll have to find out when aluminium impellers where reintroduced and whats fitted to mine.

Hi

My pump lasted 228K miles, but everything was fine except the impellor. Guess it was too many heatings and coolings that caused the plastic to become brittle. Seems to be 97/98 diesels that we know about to date.

The water pump housing looks like new, I still find it hard to believe that MB made the impellor of plastic. Mind you my 124 300TE water pump seal failed at 90K so I'm amazed that you managed 200K+ with yours.

Thanks for the info and i'm definitely going to check up on what is fitted to mine.

Bah. I guess at 170000 miles mine will have to be done sometime.

How much is a new pump? Might buy one and shove it in the boot, ready for the day.

Also, how feasible is it to stick a buzzer on the temperature gauge?
