My water pump gave up today, expecting a very large bill I took it to a garage that my brother recommended and was pleasently suprised when the mechanic told me that it will only cost me £160 thats including vat and parts and labour, I've got it booked in for Thursday. It's due a service soon so funds permitting I might get it done at the same time.

Are they used to working on Mercedes and are they going to use genuine part ???

Are you intending to keep the car for quite some time ???

I ask because my genuine water pump cost more than your total job quote.

Also the time to change water pump on my car is around 5 hours due to difficult access and dismantling of other items to access pump bolts etc.

At least I know my pump will last another 10 years and 140,000 miles as I eventually did the job myself last year.

Seems as though "something does not stack up" in your case with that quote.

Please let us all know the outcome.

Regards

I also paid double that on my 300TE some 12 years ago, and that's quite an easy one.

It is a genuine part and the mechanic has worked on my brothers E class, my brothers friend's C43 and my cousin's 330d and I've not heard one complaint from any of them. I only went to his garage for the first time yesterday and I was quite surprised to see how clean his garage was, the floor was clean and everything was organised, there was no bs from him he was quite straight forward he first told me it looks quite an expensive job, fearing my credit card was about to get hammered he made a few calls to various merc dealers and he managed to get the item at trade (£100) and charging £60 for labour and apparently he does not charge vat on the labour to people he knows, I will let you know how I get on.

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
No VAT means cash payments, which means you don't get an invoice, and no legal recourse if he buggers it up.

This is the full story (what a nightmare) I took mine to a local garage that my brother and his friends recommended, he initially told me that it was the water pump the next day he phones and tells me that the pulley needs replacing and that he can't get one for three weeks, after a couple of calls I managed to source one at Heathrow Mercedes for £58 and £35 for a fan belt and today after having my car for two day he calls and says that it's going to cost £300 to do as he needs to remove the front end of the car, i quickly collected the car and took it to a Indie and it's booked in for tomorrow and all he is charging is £130. I just don't know why I didn't take it to the indie in the first place.

Sorry I've only just read your latest post on the other forum, I do seem to spend more time on this forum than any where else.

My car is now back on my drive and all is well again, I supplied the parts (Heathrow Mercedes) and he charged £130 for the labour (normally he charges £40 p/h) he started it this morning and finished it at 14:30,
If only I had taken my car to him first place.

Sorry, I am not sure what car it is. I did my 1992 230E about 3 years ago after the water pump leaked at 110K miles. The pump was about £45 from ECP and took about 1.5 hours to fit. Very straightforward really. So far, no problems at all.
