After months of research I believe I have solved my problem. My car always smelt damp and musty. I have now replaced the rubber seal across the rear engine compartment bulkhead (and onto which the bonnet should press). It had either shrunk from age or was never the correct length from new. A gap of aprox 9 inches had existed at either end of the seal and I believe this gap had allowed rain and carwash water to bounce off the windscreen, across the bulkhead and into the car. I may not be right but since fitting the new seal four months ago I have had bone dry footwells. The car is a 10 year old 200TE and the cost of the seal aprox £10.
