Hi,

Sine I bought my wife a Merc, which is a S-reg E280, I am worry about sercurity, is the factory fitted alarm could really protect the vehicle? or should I install another alarm?

Have anyone try Tracker? is it really untouchable? as I have heard someone mention that, it will lost the signal if the car was place inside a sealed container... is it ture?

Thanks in advanced!

The standard alarm / immobiliser is very good. It is fully integrated with the vehicle electronics and without the electronic key the car cannot be started. Even the ignition key unit has no direct connection to the steering lock, it is all electronic.
This is why criminals have reverted to car jacking and stealing car keys from houses and hotels.

Your Mercedes

I remember reading an article in a car mag shortly after this new electronic ignition came in.

The test car they had been given was fitted with this system and they lost the key.The story went that it took the mercedes mobilo man about an hour with all the correct tools to steal the car.

Another point is how mercedes are cracking down of getting hold of spare keys for the cars as this is the only way to steal them. The story goes that almost need a DNA sample from you to get a new key from them ...

Your mercedes being stolen is the least of your problems , just look after the keys :D

What alarm

If your car has DAS 3 key (not a real key) which plugs into the ignition switch and uses infa red no one will hot wire the car the only way it will be stolen is if
1 they get the keys from your house
2 they lift it up and tow it away

if it is a DAS 2 car (the key has a traditional blade) it is still very unlikly that they would be able to drive the car away. it would be helpfull to know which version you have.

Traker is very good all uk ports are monited contact traker for further onfo

Oh, thanks for all of your reply, :D my key, I think is DAS3, which plug in and use infra red, so from the advice of you guys, I think is save enough....

but, as I said before, the only think I worry, is my wife, she is a typically short and small lady, that's why I worry about hijack.

I do have ask for the tracker, they have three different version, basically, the first two are nearly the same, which called Tracker Retrieve and Tracker Monitor, both use radio transmission, beside of the motion detector of the latter one.

The most expansive one, the Tracker Horizonuse use both radio and the GPS, which is better, but too expansive!

Do you guys think that the Tracker Retrieve and Monitor will be save enough?

traker

as you say you have das 3. did you know that you should be able to switch betwwen global opening and selective ( drivers door only or all doors) this is an anti hijack function. press and hold both lock and unlock buttons together untill led flashes approx 5-7 seconds this swaps function.

traker retrieve is radio transmitter only when you notifiy traker of theft

traker monitor tells traker of unautherised movment of vehicle they ring you, you ring police traker activate.

traker horizon same as monitor but with gps

none of these are anti hijack . best anti hijck is set key to selective open (driver's door only) set central locking to lock when driving. fit anti hijak film to windows

good luck

thanks for your reply! yes, I understand the pronblem, I also have this function in mind, I always lock all the doors and close all the window, when I drive.

One things I might forget to mention, is the News story, which happen few month ago, or may be a year ago, a lady in London who driving a ML, when she driving on the road, someone hit her car from the back, and she get off and check the damage, afterward, she got hijack....

I only worry that happen with my wife... if we have a tracker device, or Clifford Blackjack system, then the thief can't get away, at least u have your car back....

I just thinking that whether the tracker retrieve and tracker monitor radio signal will be cover when the car inside the tunnel or a metal container...

Traker radio signal is far stronger than gps signal. You only need to put sticky tape over gps antenna to block signal. Yes the signal range would be reduced if the car was put in a contianer but several motoring programs have had tests on such systems and the vehicles have been recovered if a GPS system car was in a contianer it would not be recovered. Traker use GPS purley to tell them when the vehicle last saw the sky
