Hi all.

Without pulling the car to bits unnecessarily, I wondered if people could give me a clue as to how I can spot if I have any fibre optic connections or anything odd ?
I have an 08 E220 Elegance, with a single cd radio unit, no blue tooth, no nav, no flashy badging, nothing clever.

How would I tell without removing it? If like to change the head unit at some point, but there seem to be various types to consider.
Any reasonable deductions I can make without pulling the dash to bits?

From your VIN look for a site (via here!!) to decode the VIN for what your car left the factory with - or cheat by emailing your VIN to comandonline.co.uk (@Alfie) who will decode the VIN, tell you what you have and what you can do with it! A couple of miles from J3 M3 they're not too far from MK and know what they're talking about - far more than any MB dealer!!

The real question seems to be does it have a fibre connection or not.
What is the fibre / optical connection for?
On my non Merc it's only for the amp's and subs.... so this ones unlikely to have any.

It depends on what your head unit is.
For example on the 230 it's fibre to the phone, TV tuner, amp, and cd changer.

On the 251 it's fibre to the DAB and Multi Media Interface (MMI) but not speakers.

From the sounds of it yours may not have anything fibre connected but the only sure way to know is pull it out.
