My new W208 Convertible has a failed sat nav. we have pulled the unit out, and the fuses are fine, the fan turns on, but nothing appears on the screen.

I am now looking at a replacement unit, but was wondering does it have to be an exact replacement, or can I use one from a diffrent model, what about a newer one ??

Do I need to have the car reprogrammed with STAR, even for a like for like replacement ?

I think I may already have communicated with you.

Anyway, first thing to check is that the display button hasnt inadvertantly been pressed. there is a button on the top row which has a small square with a dot in it. Press this and wait a few seconds. This button switches manually between day, night and off for the screen.

If the screen doesnt come on then you may just need a new screen. Does the radio work if you press FM? Ie does the unit appear to work but just no visual?

Assuming your car is a model year 2000 or newer then you can use any of the following units;

A208 820 40 89
A208 820 44 89
A210 820 54 89
A210 820 56 89

There are a couple of earlier model numbers that may work but if you are replacing the unit, go for one of the above. They are newer.

You shouldn't need any coding. However you may want to have the unit coded to make sure that its set for combi-self aligned so that the display text in the cluster is centred if its not already done.

As soon as I plug it in, the command fan comes on and stays on. I wonder was this the reason that the battery was dead when I went to look at it !

The guy then used a booster to start it, and that was that, no more comand.

I have tried the button as you suggested and yet again no response from the unit. I guess it's a new one.

Thanks for the help anyway. Mark

There is a bug in the earlier comand 2 systems that caused battery drain.

This can be fixed. However, if the Comand unit is dead then you could/should negotiate a discount on the car at least equal to the cost of replacement.

New unit plugged in (from Germany), and it plays CD's no problem, but won't recognise the CD changer.

When I put the navi disc in it says initialising, but then nothing it just sits at that screen the menu on the steering wheel says Navi Off.

I am using TeleAtlas Navigator (DX Compatible) - 1999.

Any ideas before I ship the unit back, do I need to get this re-coded ?

The Cd changer should be seen automatically. Did you plug the fibre cable in?
Is there power to the CD changer?

If you select FM/AM then press and hold MUTE 1 and 3 simultaneously for about 10 seconds it will go into diagnosis mode. In there you can select D2B wake up test. Run this and see what it says. You can also do a D2B reset from there aswell.

The disk you have is very old. You really should use a newer one.

What is the exact part number of the comand unit? It should start with A208....

Thanks for the reply Alfie.

I have had the unit out again, and there is no A208**** on it, however the individual unit module part numbers match with the old ones.

The CD changer is now working, but no sat nav, just says wait while activating or something similar. If I can just get it working, I will happily order the new CD off your site.

Told I need a new CD buy supplier.

I have now ordered a new CD from Comandonline.co.uk

Not sure it will work though, as the statement about the ring would suggest to me that there is a problem.

Will keep you posted.
