Hi What does a steering angle sensor do? By that I mean does it actually effect the streering and what happens if it fails?

Linked to the stability control, if it fails ESP and ABS lights will be on

Yes but what does it actually do? Does it actuate anything? What is it's point?

It tells the stability system where the wheels are pointing and how fast the steering wheel is being turned. With that info the car can work out what is going on and if everything is working as it should.

When the steering wheel is turned, one side of the cars wheels will be going faster than the others. Without the info from the steering angle sensor the stability system thinks a skid is occurring and the system will react to bring the wheel speeds back inline.

On a webpage I was on, it says that a faulty sensor can cause a car to veer across the road. Is this correct?

It's used to know when the vehicle is on an emission test...or is that just VW...
