Hi
I have 1997 C230 that I bought recently, near the gear shift lever, there is a W/S switch.
Can some one advise, what is this switch for and I should be driving my car in mode W or S.
Thanks

Without knowing what gearbox you have it can do different things

On the 722.6 the W is a second gear start on the 7.22.4-5 it could be just different ratios and change points

W & S on some cars and S & C on others. Basically the same function though, in S (Standard or summer) mode the car starts off in 1st gear and in W (winter) or C (comfort) mode the car starts off in 2nd gear. It also reverses using a lower gear than in S mode. Change points also differ with the car holding the gear longer in S mode, changing up much sooner in C/W mode.

Had this been a 180 or 200 then my answer would have been correct but I see that the 230 was only fitted with the 722.6 box, so I give in gracefully

I don't know the type of gear box but the gear lever has marking of gears 4,3,2 etc.. I can either put on drive or shift the gears manauly.

What is your suggestion, in normal condition should the car be driven in 'S' mode or 'W' mode.

Winter, Summer

Hi All

My manuals state Winter (W) and Summer (S) and the behaviour of the gearbox in each setting is as so eloquently described above. I usually leave it in S all year round unless the road surface is icy in which case I switch to W. You can clearly feel the difference between the W and S settings.
