Hello,

Need some advise. Been offered a very nice Merc C240 Sport saloon on a W plate. It's one of the last of the old C class models, 28k on the clock and FSH. I currently drive a 1998 Alfa Romeo 2 litre twin spark. Could anyone let me know what the C240 sport is like to drive and to live with? A friend of mine has recommended I go for a C280 instead as there is no discernible difference in MPG?

Thanks

Thanks. Colour is Azurite blue with black lether. Also has xenons and electric sunroof. Standard stereo and speakers a bit lousy though. Been offered it for £16,250.

Thing I really want to know is, can you make rapid progress like the Alfa, when you need to - or is it just for smooth progress?

Im not sure if i would go for the 280 over the 240 . Yes it is faster , but its another insurance gruop more expencive.

C240 is miles better then the 4 pot 230 K ;)

C240 is also a twin spark running 18 valves in a V.

Its really smooth engine , immaculate gearchanges and a lovely sound that a 4 pot could not achieve.

Wooooshhhhh ......

Hi Pete,

I drive a '98 C240 Sport auto in Vivianite green and absolutely adore it. I traded up from an old '86 190E. As Fuzzer/Jason has mentioned the C240 has an 18v V6 twinspark engine that puts out roughly 170 bhp. I'm not sure how it would compare to your Alfa. Can you take the said car for a thorough test drive? If you can, make sure the gear changes are creamy smooth and not snatchy. Also pushing the car hard tests the gears more than leisurely/lazy driving. £16k for a W plate with 23k miles on the clock sounds really good value. I bought mine back in Jan for approx £13k with 55k miles. Sounds like you have a real find there, I know many people that would want ur prospective car just for the fact that it has Xenon HID lights ;) I say drive it, if you like it then get it :) The Sport trim also means the car sits lower and stiffer than a standard 'C', I would still class the ride as comfortable.

BTW I get around 20ish mpg around town driving fairly briskly, but on the motorway sticking to around 80 you can coax above 30 mpg out of the car.

Sounds great with the foot down ;)

Koolvin, I never did test mine against Shude's C230K at the GTG, specs say he has another 20 Hp over mine tho'.

I hope this helps Pete, let us know how you get on.

S.

20 hp is nothing , we got another two cylinders and we can run our C240 on 95 ron unleaded as the 230k requires 98 ron ... bet a lot of people did not know that one ....

What's standard unleaded these days? 95 I'm guessing.

Certainly the sound effects of the V6 are top banana ;)
Impressive lump in the engine bay too.

no doubt Nick AKA Shude will post some performance figures.. if it was my choice I think I'd get the C240

the 230 Engine has been made ever since I can remember in MB so it's still solid if a Valve or too short - the C230K is a noisey engine.. I bet the C240 is Purrrrrfect!!!

neeeeeeeeed

I paid 16K( nearly 2.5 years ago) for my C180 which gets 22MPG around London start stop start stop journey's

the 4cyl engine costs less to maintain and is a lot more economical than the 6cyl.
According to parkers:

Performance & Consumption  Cyl / CC BHP MPH 0-60 MPG
C230K  4/2295 193 143 8.3 34
C240 V6/2398 170 135 9.3 28.5
C280 I6/2799 193 143 8.5 26.6
C280 V6/2799 193 144 8.5 28.5
C180 4/1799 122 119 12.2 32.6

the '230k is the most efficient, most powerful and most advanced production 4 cylinder petrol engine ever produced by MB.  It's not just a 230 with a blower, it's reinforced throughout and is practically indestructable.

OK so it's noisier than a 6, I grant you that.  Mine makes quite a lot of noise anyway what with the green cotton air filter and the AMG backbox.  I usually get about 30mpg on my drive to work and back.  I only paid £11,700 (ch33p!) for my 3 year old (at the time) 1998 c230k/auto/sport, with 99,600 miles on the clock.

The real trick with a blown engine is that any improvements to the airflow make a BIG difference to the performance.  Real world 10% increases in power simply due to adding a cold-air pipe etc make the 230k prolly the easiest engine to modify on a small budget.

Vinay, Steve, I am more than happy for you to try my car out at the next gtg :) .

btw Pete - you have no idea what hoops I am being made to jump through to get Xenon/HID headlights for my car, the stealership said "about two thousand pounds" to install, and I'm currently chasing someone in the USA who may be able to get the RHD units at a reasonable price...

What d'you reckon??

Thanks for all the responses! I've bought it and thoroughly pleased! Compared to the Alfa it is smoother, but the steering is not as communicative. Anyway I'll soon get used to this. One query though, why are the cup holders in the back and not  the front. Are there any after market MB cup holders avaliable??

Also do you recommend I use super-unleaded??

Pete,

I believe you can use the cubby hole just infront of the centre arm-rest as a cup holder, that's what I do. The faux carbon fibre flap trim pushes down then slowly floats forwards to reveal a cup sized recess, unless you have it already filled with stuff... even then the inner section pulls out as if it were meant for easy cleaning.

I guess you have discovered the rear cup holders buried in the rear centre arm rest.

I just use standard unleaded on mine, I never tried it on super-unleaded.

BTW happy motoring with the new purchase :)

Shude, thanks for the info there :) I thought 20Hp was fairly significant, and a 1 sec over 0-60 seems so. I wonder what the result would be if MB stuck a Kompressor on one of their V6 or V8's heh heh heh.

Here is an Excerpt (and pics from Shude's/MbenzNL cupholder mods which they kindly spent the time to document on Benzsport.com)

The cupholder comes in a box with some instructions and a bag of fittings.  After reading the instructions and seeing some scary bits about cutting the clips off and screwing stuff together, I found out that post 95 cars already have fittings for the cupholder so you just drop it in and press.

Nice and simple.

in places).

Mbenz's

The C-class cupholder...I added one a couple of months ago after I knew I was going to get a remote release switch for my trunklid which will partly fill the last spot on my center console panel where I use to put my on-the-road-cup-of-coffee...

The part has an optional B.... part# here in Europe and fits all 93-00 center consoles with storage compartment (the part comes with an additional fixation plate to cope with the modeldifference of the storage compartment that was made in 96).

... and o yes if you want the steering to be much more accurate and precise (also stops nose dives when braking and stopping distance shortans too as a bonus) you need H&R springs setup

What d'you reckon??

Many thanks guys for the info.

Do I pick this part up from my local MB dealer or is there another (chepaer) source.

Also H&R spring set up sounds good. Need this to get past all the 'Sunday morning' drivers on the A68. How much and where could I get it fitted. Does it came at the expense of ride comfort?

Cheers
Pete
