Hi,E220 1994 Estate,Hi my mechanic dropped this t shaped piece of the air inlet and parts fell out,now the car drives lumpy.
Can you tell me what it is,and what does it do?.I ask because the mechanic said it was irrelevant.

Looks to me like the MAF.

If it is the MAF this bit costs several hundred pounds and a faulty one of these causes poor running, poor fuel economy and can cause the cat to fail which would then cost even more money.

There are not many bits on a car that are irrelevant, and even less that are plugged in to something!

Do a search of this forum for 'faulty maf'.

Air flow meter or MAS - without this working you will have very poor engine response and a distinct lack of power as well as an inability to rev past 3,000 rpm. This can also cause the cat to fail (if one is fitted) if it is not fixed.
If your 'mechanic' said it was irrelevant I would recommend finding another mechanic

Lumpy running

you can get a new mas on EBAY £100.or try soaking it in brake fluid over night.A bosche dealer might sell you the middle bit only.If you cannot get the car to rev and go beyond a certain speed, that is usually the problem.

A very necessary piece of kit! Soaking won't do any good if 'bits fell out'. Replace ASAP or it'll also cost you several hundred pounds for a new catalytic converter shortly. As for your "mechanic" (?) - get rid pronto as suggested!

As my 13 year old would say Oh My God!!! - I assume he's a bicycle mechanic?
Actually I suspect what he meant was that he knows exactly what it is and how much it costs so having broken it in front of you, has fobbed you off and done a runner. I doubt you'll be hearing from him again!
Above spot on - don't drive it much and get a new one ASAP or it can get even more expensive very quickly.

I see new Bosch one's on Ebay for £75.Clearly prices have fallen dramatically with economies of scale.

Hi.used Dronsfields for the air mass meter.Fitted in seconds .....marvelous
Mant thanks from forum members and Drondsfield.
interestingly enough, the probes in my old air sensor were non existant. How on earth would they break off?Needless to say ,i didnt try to see how fragile they were in the new one, but surely they have some tensile strength. Any way cheers again and thanks....colin
