Both sides, same number. The little box with the electrical connection is bolted to the black bracket, which in turn is bolted to the top of the strut.

That I wud say, stand to be corrected? is sensing the qlty of ride, rough roads or the like and passing info to some ecm. Controlling trans, braking or ride height look in Yr handbook see if Anythin is there. Or disconnect see wot lights up on dash. Be careful there. Knowin benz gettin resulting code or warning shut up may involve gettin robbed for a diagnostic visit. Wait a bit, someone will be along, will be interested how far off the mark I am

So I presume it's attached to to the bracket which in turn is bolted to the top of the strut, so if I get hit on the front wing, the airbag goes off, could I move the bracket slightly, but still on top of the strut, would the airbag still work?

I can see a dodgy aftermarket fashionable strut brace in your near future…;)

Correct, Russ, but less of the dodgy, but if it's more trouble than it's worth, might not bother,
we'll see. ;) :)
