What is this sound

I'm hearing this "cranking sound" everytime I turn the steering wheel hard left or right. I have a 96 E200. Please help.

Low power steering fluid?

This is usually indicated when full lock is reached.

BTW don't hold the wheel there for too long as this stresses the system (as stated in many owners manuals!).

Top the fluid up and turn the wheel lock to lock to bleed the system and all should be well!
