What mpg are you getting from your E270 CDi Auto?

I bought a new E270 Diesel Auto eighteen months ago and have been very dissapointed with its fuel consumption. I've had it back to the dealer several times and each time they find something that will improve things.

I'm getting mid to high 20s around town and commuting, and around 40 over a motorway journey. I had expected something higher from both, especially on the motorway.

Friends who have E220 Diesel manuals are getting much better.

Anyone with same car as me please post what you are getting.

No idea as I'm no Merc fan (it's my first) nor a petrolhead. Wouldn't have thought they'd have two engines of the same size though.

Someone pls let me know what they're getting from their E270 CDi Auto.

Get around 22-25 around town, around 40 on motorway with sensible driving. Mine is an estate E270CDI Avantagarde (03 53) though and mpg suffers considerably with the air con on as you would expect.

However, mpg is a non issue compared to the utterly woeful reliability and build quality. I have had 39 warranty claims in the past 18 months and the gearbox is now on the way out!

Supplying dealer is trying to negotiate a buyback with DC UK. Regional Aftersales manager has approved the BB but now needs DCUK approval.

This should really be a separate thread but if anyone has any experience of the buyback procedure, then I would welcome their feedback.

The MPG you are getting sounds about right to me. I borrowed an E320CDI and it returned a rather disapointing 5mpg more than my petrol E240 (2.4l v6) gas guzzler. As I get 19-26 round town and 31-38 on a run, add around 5 and you get what you are seeing.

I am assuming that yours meets the EU4 regulations, which reduces your company car tax (assuming it is a company car) by reducing emissions. Unfortunatley, the particle filter that they have to use kills mpg at the same time. I suspect that this is why MB have recently dropped the old 270 and 320CDI engines and replaced them with the new 280 and 320 CDI engines.

I'm considering a 270CDI myself but will insist on one of the last EU3 models for this reason. (Private car so no tax to worry about).

Hello,

I don't know if this helps, two weeks ago I bought a C class coupe, 220 CDI.(auto)
I have never had a diesel car before, and my previous car was an SLK 230K.(auto)

The performance is just as good, and actually smoother, the computer tells me that the car round town seems to be averaging 38-42MPG and round larger runs 40-60MPH areas, I seems to be getting 48-51.

Very impressed.
I haven?t yet gone on a good run.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies and please keep them coming.

It rather looks like I am getting the same as you guys and it's what I should expect. :(

It is a company car and I assume it has all the necessary bits to meet EU4 Regs (****** Brussels).

We have a large fleet and a lot of the guys who work for me have E220 CDis. These seem to deliver much better performance, especially the manuals on long journeys.

I'm a little peeved as I've avoided diesels in the past assuming them to be slow but frugal. Now I've got one, it's thirsty but fast (torque and power).

Overall, it's very comfortable, ideal for family journeys (my wife always sleeps on long drives and the (passenger) seat is like an armchair, my two kids are tall, and we take loads of luggage), ideal for my football trips (I travel over 100 miles each way as a Season Ticket holder of my club), and looks smart in the car park. I feel safe and never even think about reliability.

On the downside, nobody lets me out at junctions (they never did as I've always had Beemers before) and my customers all assume I get paid too much. The aftersales and service stinks. :-x

On the real anal side of healthy, if anyone is looking to see how much luggage they can get in the massive boot, after some really sad research, I've bought two large Antler cases specifically because they fit very snugly side-by-side, longways in the boot. Can't believe I've just shared that embarrsing info with the www. If you're equally sad, I can let you have the Antler product name. ;)

I've got a CLK270 CDI auto which I bought last November, when it was 12 months old. It's really growing on me, having been a bit sceptical about a diesel and the Merc customer service. It has had a few gremlins, but cars this complex are bound to . I get the impression that my local dealer is trying really hard to please (to the extent that the service manager practically begged me to give him a good score on the MB feedback form at the last service - quite embarrassing).

As for fuel economy, if I drive with a light foot, I can get 30-35 in town traffic and beyond 40 (and even up to 50) on the motorway. Put my foot down, and that does go down quite quickly to 35 on the motorway. But this is a really easy car to drive gently.

My previous car was a petrol Toyota Corolla (hard to admit), and I'm matching or bettering that car's mpg consistently, which is great.

Blimey! I must be missing something. My wife's C180K (petrol), with the cruise control set to 70MPH, shows on the computer, wait for it, '39.2' MPG. I checked the number when I filled up and they were roughly right. Compared to the C220, the C180K is doing a fantastic job in the economy stakes, and is as fuel efficient as an E270CDi!

Fuel consumption

I have a Van Aaken Smartbox on my E220 CDI auto estate (Current model). Without the 'box, I averaged around 42mpg, with it nearer 45mpg with much improved perfomrance. (Lowest of four power settings).

My previous generation E estate with 220 CDI engine was more economical, but it was a 'slower' car. Over a trip reading of 38,000 miles it averaged 44.7mpg.

The consumption computer lies. I have seen it reading 54mpg, and it regularly suggests 48mpg plus on a long motorway run. When I do a fuel top up to trip mpg calcualtion, it always seems pretty much the same; yet to better 45mpg even when running aircon off and sticking to 70.

Ironically, I get best mpg on supermarket fuel but best poke from BP Ultimate diesel - when I can find it and when it used to be priced affordably. Car seems to like ordinary BP and Shell diesel best, pocket likes ASDA at 92.9/litre.

I don't *think* the 270CDi engine was available as EU4 - I guess MB didn't bother as the engine has been relaced before EU4 becomes mandatory.

I have a C270 auto Avantgarde Estate. As it's my own car, but driven long distances for work, I'm anal about its fuel consumption. On long motorway journeys, with no hold ups etc, driven at 75 ish, it'll do 49MPG. It makes no noticeable difference if a/c is on or off.
Short (5 mile) commutes, in reasonably clear traffic, it does 33-35MPG.
One thing I do notice is that, on my longer runs, it takes around 40 miles for the fuel consumption to settle down - it must take that long for the engine to get fully up to temp etc.
I've only had thr car since March, but I notice that it's set to use the a/c as a heater in cold weather - I assue this will impact fuel consumption a lot on shorter runs.

I must admit long runs with a/c on give about 40 but with it off seems to go to about 42. Town driving seems to be late 29/32.

A big but, the quality issues chew up any savings. Go buy a petrol Lexus and spend no money on repairs and keep your sanity!!

Think you're right on two points Rory:

Firstly it take some time to get to optimum consumption (and probably only gets there at all on long journeys, not stop-starts)

Secondly mpg tails off pretty quickly above 70 mph. Above 80 and forget it.

How do you turn the a/c off?

In my C270 (with the standard setup, not digital option) I press the button that says 'A/C'! The switch's operation is counter-intuitive, in that A/C is off when the light is on.

Just had a look at mine and you press a button marked "AC off". Never noticed it before. You think they'd make it a little obvious (Tee Hee).

Wonder what else I've got and don't know about?

My brother has an E270 cDi Auto. Ultimate performance does not match the petrol alternatives and fuel consumption is disappointing. C class diesels 220 & 270 seem to do much better. My C240 Estate (petrol) costs no more for fuel per mile than the E270 cDi - wait for the next generation diesel E class - current models haven't got it right!

P.S. If you live in Devon don't buy any Merc - you will regret it.

I'm sure if we did that we'd be getting much higher, well over 50, but we are talking about average mpg, including the cold start etc.

I'm getting 34mpg average between tank fulls, thats with a 30mile commute to work on motorway and A roads, which normally gives 42mpg, and drviving home on A roads and driving the car very hard which gives about 30-32mpg which is why I average just over 34mpg normally. I've found switching the aircon off makes no difference.

If I was to just drive a couple of miles to the shops, it would only give high 20's.

I disagree, the E270 is quicker than the E240 and gives much better mpg!

Fuel Consumption E270 CDI

I get 31-32 mpg around town, and 45-50 mpg on a long run at 70 mph. At 75 mph I get about 45 mpg.
